This might sound weird, but how do you begin praying?

This might sound weird, but how do you begin praying? I’ve been told prayer is a very powerful tool in recovery but I am kinda at a loss of how to prayer aside from the serenity prayer and third step prayer. I’ve never been religious and I’m somewhat struggling with the concept of a higher power. Maybe this is more of a question about how you incorporate spirituality into your recovery? I’m not even sure anymore. I am willing to try anything

Something or someone greater than you that can have your back in times of need or in times of celebration. Some folks do religions. Some folks use the rooms. Point is, having a power you can trust fully all the time and know that will always be there for you.

I am not good at formal prayers. I do start every day with the same one.

God thank you for keeping me sober yesterday. Please help me to stay sober today. Help me to live life on life’s term. Most of all God help me to see your will for me, so that I may carry it out. I pray for the health and happiness of my friends and family. I pray for the sobriety of my AA family. Amen.

Then I will talk to God through the day; mostly asking for guidance, peace, or comfort as I deal with the days events. It works for me.

I'm Christian. We start prayer with Thanksgiving/Gratitude.

Also, acting as if has a way of rubbing off on you after awhile.

I’m agnostic and don’t have a pinpoint in what precisely I believe in so I sometimes start with “To Whom It May Concern”. I tend to pray in my head like I’m writing a letter. I like to start with something I’m grateful for and then ask for strength and openness and compassion toward others.
I think that, whatever you believe, if you start with an open heart you really can’t go wrong

I’m also not religious, but my daily prayer starts with “thy will not mine, and ends with “my way got me into this mess, your way got me out. Thank you”

If you had a father that supplied a place to live, the beat in your heart, the breath in your lungs, the sunrise....it would be easy to say thank you. You have that, and more. Say thanks , tell him your fears, tell him your joys, ask for his help...

Prayer is just taking to God. Talk to him as you would an old friend

Hello God I’m here today to thank u for ….. and ask u for ….

I honestly believe that prayer is personal and should be done in whichever way a person feels most comfortable. There is legitimately no right or wrong way to do this. Some people express themselves out loud, some speak in their mind/heart and others write/journal…or, like me, they do all three.

Just start talking to the higher power you believe in. Like Steve said

For me, prayer is just communicating with God. I do it throughout the day. It may be something as simple as “I need wisdom here, God, I’m unsure how to handle this”.

Try meditating :woman_in_lotus_position:t4: and then speak :speaking_head: your desires, fears and gratitude :pray:t4: out loud or in your head
