Today i start my journey to sobering up. I am 23 years old and i have been drinking almost every night since i was 21. I am extremely nervous to start this and how it is going to affect my mental health. Would love to start chatting with people and hearing how to handle day by day temptation. Thank you in advance.

Hi Ryan, my suggestion is to get plugged into a program. There are a variety of types of programs, a few: AA, SMART Recovery, Recovery Dharma, The Luckiest Club, Recovery Elevator, Celebrate Recovery. They all offer something a little different, so I suggest doing some research. Getting plugged into a program will help you create a community and start building a recovery toolbox. Also, posting here regularly can help, there are lots of supportive and encouraging people here.

I can’t add any more suggestions than the excellent ones already mentioned, so I’ll give some encouragement. It’s scary at first. You’ll at some point not need substances as a crutch and discover an inner strength you didn’t know you have. To walk away is a strength and not a weakness.

Way to go Ryan! One day at a time, focus on what's in front of you today. Not yesterday, not tomorrow. Just now, in this moment. You've got this

Thanks for the support!

When I decided to quit I went to detox and joined a group when I got out. It’s weird sitting down with people and hearing theirs story’s and realizing they had some of the same struggles I had.

Hi Ryan, get to some meetings, get phone numbers, and build a sober network. You’re making a great decision!

Welcome to the beginning of a beginning :hugs:

I’m happy you are going for it, you got it if you want it. But I will repeat what others have said, some support system is crucial. I just left my meeting, it works if you work it.

Way to go man, you can do this we’re all rooting for you! I’m on my six day sober and I know if I can do it you can do it especially since I’ve been drinking for 25 years.

Oh wow! I love how you’re ready to change all on your own. God and AA is how I did it
There’s so much more to it than just not drinking. I got lots of good stories and I love to chat

Great job !

Yeah That is a big piece of good advice for someone on their first day.
