Tomorrows four months. I just moved to a new city

Tomorrows four months. I just moved to a new city and meeting people but they’re not aware that I’m sober. I’m 27, but going to undergraduate school and a lot of people are young and excited to turn 21 and talk about drinking a lot. It’s making me a little nervous about making friends but I guess I have to go and find people outside of school that are also sober and older. Idk being around so many drinkers is making me feel not normal but I just have to remember me and these other student are at wayyy different points in life

Are you at a major public university? Many will have sober/recovery groups to join. Search around

Nah it’s a pretty small art school, I checked and there aren’t any sober groups

Is it making you nervous because you are afraid of a relapse if you hang around them or are you nervous because you don't want to have to explain why you are not drinking?

Congratulations on 4 months btw!

Honestly both, I’ve been doing fine and not even thinking about it until I started meeting people

You don’t have to party with college kids just cuz you’re in college. You’re in art school, you could maybe focus on making art instead of partying.

I'd focus a lot of your time and attention on your studies, that's the one thing I regret when I went for apparel design... the drinking/partying made me lose sight of my goals/dreams. Friends should and will come naturally :white_heart:
Congrats on 4 months! You'll do wonders :sparkles:

Well I know everyone is different. When I first started getting sober I was still working in a bar. After work we would all have drinks to decompress from the night, at first I was scared to tell everyone I was sober, so I used the excuse that my doctor put me on medicine that I couldn't drink on. For the most part that seemed to end the not drinking conversation, most of the people understood and didn't press it any further. As for the urge to drink, I just kept looking at my sober tracker. Watching the number of days go up on that tracker gave me a huge sense of pride and I didn't want that number to go back to 0. I'm not sure if this helps but I hope it does. Keep it up! You've got this.

How was the meeting?

Congratulations, there are 2 meeting apps I highly recommend them and zoom meetings are the bomb! I recommend Friendly Circle Berlin 6, try googling it too for current recovery resources. Good luck mate! 🫶🕊❤️‍🩹🙏🏻

Just remember take it one day a time . One situation at a time. Staying sober is a life style . But it a decision. You have to make everyday . I find something that helps me is saying alittle prayer. Good luck.

Oh that’s awesome I will check them out thank you!

The meeting was awesome, I met so many people and everyone was super nice and exchanged numbers- Some people even invited me to go out to dinner after but I was a lil too anxious for that. And the meeting group is having a picnic potluck today! I guess meetings are an awesome way to meet people!

I agree!! There are a lot of us out here, seeking connection with ppl who’ve walked in our shoes. Addiction doesn’t discriminate. Old/young, gay/straight, black/white and everyone in between. And none of us can stay sober alone.
