I am so incredibly uncomfortable with the stillness. The quiet is something I fear. If even for a moment the music is blaring or the t.v. Is not on, I’m not on a call… I want to run.
I remember first getting clean and loving that I could tolerate the quiet but lately I don’t want it. I don’t like how my mind is operating. It seems like it needs some sort of “tune up”. Whatever that might be…
Does anybody else even slightly relate or am I on my own On feeling crazy unstable?
I felt and feel the same. I just think it’s the fact that I like to keep soaking in information lately. I have 4 audio books going and music is always on in the house. Plus the kids.
Are you plugged into something? AA, NA, smart, etc.? We as addicts in our own minds alone is a horrible place to be.
I was but kinda burned out on 2 meetings a day plus IOP 3 days a week. I did both aa/na.
I’m with K Bradford. When I start to feel wound up over just about anything, I find a few minutes of meditation and reading recovery literature re-centers me.
Try some guided meditations
I totally relate
Have you ever tried yoga? It could help be a stepping stone. You around people but it’s also quiet.
The stillness is torture. What do you do when the world stops and you have to sit with your thoughts? I'm trying to figure this out myself. You are not alone.
Meditation helped me to relearn to enjoy the stillness. Prayer does as well.
What groups did you visit?
Na
I have. I did it for at least a year when I first got clean. It was amazing in every way. Gotta get back there
AA meetings are working for me at the moment. I am completely turned off by the prayer/higher power non-tangible stuff, but the genuine friendship of the people involved keeps me coming back, especially since I have found some secular meetings.

I feel as if most humans whether or not one qualifies as an “ addict “ are uncomfortable with being, remaining still ( for even a few moments ). The majority of us are taught to run away from our emotions, realities. I drank as much as I did due to my constant states of anxiety, depression-which alcohol of course only made worse. The suggestions regarding yoga, meditation/yes. Such has helped. Journaling, walking, online meetings. And I also feel that accepting, acceptance is key. You are not crazy and / or the only one who feels as you do. The good news is there are so many resources , more than ever to help with acceptance of the discomfort. Wishing you and everyone here well!
