Up and well up lol

Greatful that I’m sober today so far. Mind is clear I don’t feel so gross and blah. Wanting to attend these AA meetings. Hopefully I find a home group. How long has it took everyone else? Also how long to get a sponsor ?

Great questions!! It took me way longer to find a home group than it did a sponsor. I got a sponsor after going to the same daily meetings for about a week. I ended up joining his home group as well, but that group and sponsor were just not for me (my first "sponsor" only had a couple of months of sobriety and hadn't worked the steps so he was a sponsor in name only). After that, I was going to meetings all over the place. Men kept telling me that I really needed a sponsor, but in my head I heard, "why don't you ask the next guy to be your sponsor". I felt like they were just passing me off to the next guy, not realizing that they wanted me to ask them to be my sponsor. It hadn't dawned on me yet that I had to be the one to ask him...

After going to meetings almost every day for the first few months, I got a sense of what AA was. I was also told to find a home group where they were talking about the 12 steps, and what they did to recover from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. I did that and joined my current home group approximately 3 months into sobriety.

As for a sponsor, it was similar to what they suggested about a home group. Find a sponsor who has what you want, and one who is talking about what he did to recover from this disease. After that, life got easier. I just had to be open-minded, willing to change, willing to follow his suggestions. I did it, and now I'm honored to be a sponsor to 8 different men who are all at different phases of their sobriety.

I'm happy to hear that you are willing to give AA a shot. The program truly saved my life. Everything I have right now, it's thanks to AA and to God. It is the only thing that I have ever done, which has allowed me to stay sober for over 2 years now. Prior to this point, I'd be lucky if I could string together a week. Inevitably, something would always happen and I'd go right back to drinking. It was my solution to everything and to forgetting, at least temporarily all of my problems and numbing my pain. It worked until it no longer did for me.

I'm sure you will find the same amazing human beings in AA that I have found, and wish for nothing but success for you in sobriety. I'm praying for you :pray:t2:

Glad to hear admnd better to see!... To get a sponsor will be fully dependent on self and resources. It took me 2+ yrs and 18mo actively searching. My situation and level of honesty made it difficult as I take THC to sleep when it persists beyond 3 nights. My last sponsor didn't like this and ultimately dropped me.

My current sponsor, I met here, and so couldn't be happier.

How long it takes, this is a loaded question, as sobriety is a lifetime commitment, depends on which "it" we are talking. I attend more virtual meetings than anything due to my limitations and although I prefer face to face, two of my 3 favorite meetings are via zoom.

I would be happy to send you zoom meeting resources. Just lmk... Congratulations on take the first and biggest step. This can be the best decision you've ever made, if you are willing to keep at it despite and and all complications! You are so very worth it!

You can get a sponsor your very first meeting if you'd like. I've seen it work for many people. Some have to go through a few before they find one that fits. If you hear someone share and like what they have to say, just go up to them after the meeting and ask them if they'd be willing to help you. It's a humbling experience but the leveling of our pride has to start somewhere. Good luck to you!
