Uphold the sobriety
especially on a day like today
just like every other day
unfortunately
there’s no third way
there’s only sobriety
and not sobriety
so curb the compulsions
awash with anxiety?
feel it
entangled in dysfunction?
walk away
body’s score keeping?
heal it
cycles repeating?
attend a meeting
are you your own antagonist?
discover the root
and be compassionate
want a better future?
imagine it
then go and get it
but not as the addict
that you once were
accosted by abandonment
I remember why I used to drink
a gorgeous numbness in which to sink
but now I sit with it
this malignant spirit
that exists within
no applause
for hard this is
feeling of feelings
now garden variety
with no pause
I’m present in my life
in its entirety
and if I don’t get it right
well, I’m really trying
and I’ve no plans to give in
but if I said this was easy
I would just be lying
