Very disappointed that this app is catering to paid sponsorship

Very disappointed that this app is catering to paid sponsorship companies. AA and NA members sponsor one another at no cost 24/7 365 days a year expecting nothing in return except remaining clean and sober themselves. And frankly when I hear the stories of these coaches they are almost always full of holes in revealing the honest truth about their addiction and recovery. If this is what works for you great but there’s a reason AA and NA sponsors aren’t paid. It’s part of the reasons for the 12 traditions that have held AA together for decades. But don’t come into AA or NA selling your wares. Someone will likely let you know it’s not the way we do the work. Unfortunately some of the opioid epidemic money has gone to this with a two week education course and releasing these coaches to get paid for sponsorship. Do you want a paid recovery coach or a sponsor who will work for free has done the 12 step work and has solid recovery? Some people say that few of us actually recover. It’s hard. I take my hat off to anyone who makes it in whatever way they get it. But 2 weeks “education” is just a sad sell imho. It’s a lifetime of work for many of us. I’ve tried virtually everything and every way possible until I was willing to commit to AA and the step work. I’m grateful for it. 9/17/14

Hi Laurie! Appreciate you sharing. I don’t know much about the paid sponsorship companies and coaches. Like you, I go to AA and choose to live my life via the help of the 12 steps, sponsors, meetings, and fellowship of the program. That being said, I could choose to see the things in A.A. that I have issue with, or I could be open minded, willing and humble to just enjoy the goodness of it. I have wrestled with A.A. for many years, so I can definitely relate to those that have difficultly with it. However, it works and I need it. So I stopped looking at it with my usual critically overthinking mind, and just surrendered to the idea that I don’t need to know, understand, or agree with everything. I apply the same thing to this app. I love it. I love the connection with others. I have learned so much from the people on here regarding great books, podcasts, spiritual retreats, meditations, breathing exercises etc. I choose not to get caught up in what you bring to light. I haven’t thought about that before. Now that you bring it to light, I agree with you. However, today I choose to let it be. I’m sure there’s a good side to it, but regardless I choose not to even think about it because I get so much benefit from this app. Hope you can look past it as well. I have enjoyed some of your posts and comments, and like the perspective you share with us. We do need as many emotionally sober humans on here as possible. There are so many beautiful people struggling with this horrible illness. Keep shining your light and showing us the way out. Sorry for the verbose post. I’m really bad at keeping it short and simple lol :peace_symbol:❤‍🩹

The recovery coaching is a new concept and I believe it was borrowed from AA. If it works for some people great but I think it’s more a money grab from opioid monies. I live in Wisconsin. Somewhere around 2 million dollars in opioid money was given to UW hospital and clinics to have someone with addiction history travel around the state and teach 2 week course to become a paid recovery coach. Many of these people are not even in recovery other than having a family member affected or be somehow tied to recovery. Sadly no monies have actually gone to residential rehab. I’m just kinda outraged about it. That’s a lot of money going to pay a hourly wage for listening and answering a phone call and basically doing very little for what AA offers free of charge. Leave it to the US to make people rich off of misery. I’ve yet to hear about success stories and long term recovery from it. Just wanted to share what might be a waste of time for some people and for them to know that what we give is free.

This kind of thing is why I repeat the serenity prayer to myself regularly. If it helps some folks great.
