I’ve gone to a few AA meetings. I would like a sponsor, but I don’t know how to get one. Some ladies have shared phone numbers but any advice would help. I don’t know what to ask. I went to a meeting over the weekend (9/20) where they asked if anyone wanted to sponsor, but it was only men who raised their hands. That was also my first meeting they ever asked if anyone was available to sponsor. Then I went to a meeting two days later where maybe one or two ladies raised their hand, but they all walked out and left immediately when the meeting ended. Also, at that meeting I spoke and cried and everyone knew I had never been there before, and I said I was new to AA.
I hear you I know in some chapters that is an issue… there needs to be understanding when people are new it’s hard to ask for help and know what to do. I can understand this dilemma 100%. If anything I can do to offer help or support that’s what we are all here for - to help each other 🫶🏼
We're all here to help. You can always reach out, don't be afraid to speak up, those lady's that walked out after the meet could have new to AA also, and might be going through the same thing you are with not knowing what to do. Here, there are a lot of options and a lot of good people that can help and guide you. When you feel the urge to drink, get on here and post and talk about what's going on and what's giving you the temptations. One thing is getting out and away from the things that trigger you to want to drink. You have to change scenery. And change the people around you that don't support you, it's easier said then done, but you're not weak as you might think, just look how you took the initiative to go to AA and to reach out on here!!
Great that you’re reaching out! Don’t be discouraged. It will happen. Better to connect with the right one than just anyone. If they have women’s meetings, you may want to explore that option. Either way, keep coming back. Early sobriety is a lot! Try not to overthink it too much. Just show up and the miracle will happen
@alli394706 a sponsor is someone who you can relate to. Someone who has a character trait that you like, want and feel comfortable with.
Sometimes it does take a bit to find a sponsor. Use the numbers you have and talk to them about finding someone. Talk to anyone at the meetings even the men know who the women that have been around are and who's the better ones to get to(they may even be able to get them to stop and talk to you next meeting). It took me awhile to find one and when I did he went back out within a couple months but thankfully by then I found someone else who was and has been a great fit for me. I've been at this over 15 months now And I can say for sure it works if you work it. Sit back and enjoy the journey nothing happens overnight.
