Went out to dinner with my family for the first

Went out to dinner with my family for the first time since getting sober- ordered a non-alcoholic beer and my sister called me “ boring “ :disappointed:

You aren’t boring, you’re smart. Alcohol will not make you less boring just less aware.

A drunk person is only more charming and fun to another drunk person.

Thanks you guys! It was already hard enough to not to get the drink and it made it so much worse I appreciate the support

Don't let anybody bring you down like that. Even tho she might have been joking, that's something that is a serious issue to you, so tell them not to say that. Have a talk with them and let them know you're changing your life and want to be a better person, or something like that.

Good job not giving in.

Limet your excursions to one’s limited to other AA’s. People know how to find you.

You will get that. Stay sober

Ah family. Can't live with them, can't shoot them and bury 'em in the backyard

I have family member who still don't get it despite losing one sibling to the disease and my repeated 24 hours of sobriety. I can't change them. All I can change is my reaction to them.

Well, that and the subversive sarcastic Christmas presents they now receive but that's another story

Surprisingly one of the things I continue to struggle with feeling "lame" when others are drinking even six months in. The good thing is that I now know (and can remember) that being my true self is way more interesting than being sloppy drunk. It will take time but one day they will be jealous you can shine without the sauce!

Misery loves company still holds true. Actually had a server tell everyone at my table that I must not be any fun since I stayed with water as the others ordered drinks.

I love the Ah family. That’s my life. Went to outdoor restaurant yesterday and first thing husband did was go up to the bar and get a beer. I couldn’t believe he couldn’t wait for the server. It was beautiful there but I felt very upset with myself. Then a comment was made “see this is what you do you hang out” I don’t know about anyone else but hanging out near a bar to me means drink. Am I crazy or what. Not at the point yet to not think the way. I can so relate to the boring part.

I have gotten the same boring comments also.

Facts!

When someone calls me “boring” for not drinking, my reply is always the same…. I can live with that.

It’s anything but boring when we drink

My family has been pretty supportive and cool about my not drinking. Of course, they did see how out of control I could get when I drink.

Not sure if my comments are out of place here, but I'm just saying that I'm sure some people in your life are supportive. It may be hard, but sometimes we just have to disregard the negativity, and focus on the positive.

Family dinners especially can be so hard when you’re sober. And honestly,, always choosing alcoholic drinks is kinda boring. What’s boring about taking control over you life again? Might be boring to her, but the fact that you’re resisting something that has such a tight grip on people is the total opposite.
Is it an option to tell her how that comment made you feel? I think she should be excited for you.
Congrats on making it out to that dinner and not drinking! You’re doing a great job.

Some people don’t get it and that’s ok. As long as you do!

You’re life is becoming anything but boring. Boring is the same routine of finding alcohol, getting drunk, then dealing with the hang over and same drama. You’re new life isn’t going to look ANYTHING close to that.
