An old friend of mine died, they had a get-together for all his old friends at a bar. I went, said hi, drank a root beer, and by then, I was ready to leave, so I did.
I’m glad I went, and I’m also glad I took precautions and left early.

Wow! You demonstrated this perfectly. You had a legitimate reason for being there. You stayed there only as long as you needed to and then you got out.
