Went To Party

Went to a friend’s bday party tonight. We share lots of moots and they’re all cool for the most part but all drink excessively. Open bar. Bad music (top 40 garbage). My friend and I lean on each other w our mental illness issues and I wanted to show up for him. Also wanted to attempt to socialize myself as I rarely go to parties anymore. I have zero desire to drink. I work around alcohol so it’s not an uncommon occurrence to be in an environment w booze flowing. In an hour in a half I shared very little conversation of substance. Intoxicated new acquaintances making plans that’ll never come to fruition. My point- same old sh!t. Not my scene. I am glad I attempted to socialize. Also glad I was last to arrive and first to leave.

Arnie’s party in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape more suitable for me

Good for you. It's amazing how surfacey things are in that environment and lack substance.

I'm starting to share that same view. The intoxicated ppl around me just show me how stupid and embarrassing I was. Instead of sparking the desire to indulge, it's starting to get repulsive. Yesterday's graduation party was just a reminder as to why I chose to lose the poison. It's good to still be social. I'm trying to get out and socialize too. I've closed myself off before and found it's just not a healthy way to deal with things.

Same here. I have to attend an annual week long event for work in Chicago in a few weeks. I have no desire to drink and am not looking forward to dealing with the drunk dinner crowd. Good idea to show up late and leave early.

Just remember that if you hang around a barbershop long enough you're going to get a haircut!

I'm sure you think I'm being negative but I'm really only speaking from experience because I can remember saying similar words myself many years ago and telling people that I had zero desire to drink and I really saw no harm in hanging out with other people that drink. But you know what happened to me? Somewhere along the line, I picked up a drink.

Alcohol is cunning, baffling and Powerful. It is very patient.

It's all fine and dandy to be around people that are drinking if we have a legitimate reason for being there such as business. But if you're hanging around people that drink in order to have a good time you're blowing smoke up your b-tt.

You’re not being negative. You’re speaking from experience. I don’t post things w the expectation that everyone will see things as I do.
I work in the food and beverage industry. I was also there to catch up w clients that I need to see more of and get a feel for why I’m not seeing them as frequently in our establishment as of late. May sound like justification and I get that. I count on others in recovery reminding me of the flip side to certain actions and I thank you for it :pray:t4:

Sounds like you had a legitimate reason for being there.
One Day At A Tme

I hear you on the haircut, but seriouslyit is okay to be around others that drink imo. Intentions are important. Alcohol is everywhere, people who drink and don't drink are both good and bad for our own personal lives and our own recovery. Setting up intentions does not have to be business, it can be fo socializing or support for a friend. Working this life is wild and am glad for apps like this as a tool. One thing helping me is to start thinking about my intentions . I really want more of a social life in nyc, thinking of joining a volunteer group.
