What are some good/healthy coping methods for tough times?

Really struggling with quitting alcohol. Before COVID hit, I was on a decent track - hitting the gym early morning and not drinking for weeks. Recently, a lot has happened: I learned my S.O. cheated on me on Christmas night; my birth mom was hospitalized with COVID and is struggling to breathe (no intubation yet); my dad also contracted COVID but is doing OK without hospitalization; and I learned a day ago that a dear friend, mentor and role model passed away last year (I sent him a Christmas card unaware of this). Just a lot of unfortunate and sad news in the span of a couple weeks. Really appreciate your time, support and input.

That is a lot to take on. Keep using the gym as long as it’s healthy outlet. Don’t push it all through you. Try tackling one at a time to stay from overwhelming yourself. And I would use my therapist to talk to and work it through. A good ear that is unobjectionable. Maybe an extra meeting a day even if it is virtual .

Thanks so much for your response and advice, Simon. I am seeing a therapist and discussing this. Definitely helps. That additional meeting might be best around this time, too. Appreciate you.

You got this! With everything else happening it's important to stay strong for yourself!

gosh Dan, that's so much in a short period of time. sometimes it feels like it all comes at once. and you're actively trying to stay sober through it, which in itself is a huge deal.

I think one of the major healthy coping methods is talking about what you're feeling and it's super brave of you to reach out with all this! I'm glad to hear you have a therapist too, therapy has for real saved my life.

I would also recommend taking good care of your body during this time. drink water. sleep. eat what makes you feel good. do a big stretch, even if it's just from bed. you're doing great. here if you ever need to chat.
