What do you look for in a sponsor? Looking for guidance. Just met the 30-day mark.
My suggestion is to look for someone who has what you want. Consider the way they share, the way they interact with others, and the life they have and they way they talk about it.
Jenn makes very good points. I would add that sponsorship is not a marriage. There is no need to seek the 1 perfect person. Finding someone to guide you through your recovery program is the goal. I chose the man whose story resonated most with me. And he is fantastic. But if either of us feel like we are not helping each other, there are no hard feelings because this is about recovery, not popularity (ego).
My first sponsor was a student of the program. He understood the steps and we did them by the book. I mean he wasn’t a robot. We had deep conversations and became good friends. I switched sponsors after working the steps. I needed what my sponsor gives me now. He’s a rough no nonsense dude. He helps me with setting the boundaries in my life and calls me out on my whiny bull$hit. And he’s really helped me with my golf game too. lol
It’s funny you mentioned golf. I used to very much enjoy the game but haven’t played in a couple years. Not since getting sober. It’s hard to imagine playing without a 12 pack.
So that’s where we started. The initial objective was for him to teach me how to enjoy the game without booze. I was extremely skeptical, but have learned to thoroughly enjoy it without that junk. He has taught me so much AA stuff through the game. One shot at a time, don’t compare your game to anyone else’s, control expectations, stay in your swing, forget about the last shot…that kind of stuff. I can’t wait for the season to start.
