What does having fun in sobriety look like to you?
Idk. I am new and beginning. Please advise on your tips especially during #1 I am recognizing my alcohol problem. But how do you deal with the holidays and coming from a family who drinks.
It’s a mix. Some video games, some music making, some conversational bantering/ debating. Teasing old girls on the phone is fun too. Pick up yard games with the kids, reading other peoples comments on Reddit.
Getting out to aa meetings to meet lots of people and making friends.letting people help you.and growing up.getting hope.livening your self.
Almost 2.5 years sober and I still don’t know. After 30 years of use it’s not easy to relearn. I don’t try to shoot for happiness but for contentment, with that the rest will come.
I find AA meetings fun as he11, but I also train Krav Maga three nights a week. That is something I could never manage in active use. I fish and hunt. I mean actually fish and hunt, not just use it as an excuse to drink. Same with golf. I enjoy time with my adult children (quality time). I have lots of real hobbies now that my drinking hobby is in the past. So much time now. Great opportunities. Positive activity.
I had to ask myself that too early in sobriety. I had forgotten the joy if the simple things I used to love. So I made a mental list:
Spending quality time with my kids and being silly
A good conversation over a cup of coffee.
The smell of the salt in the air by the ocean.
Time spent with family.
Dogs
Camping.
Riding dirt bikes and atvs
Shooting.
The beach
Pedicures
I had 3 back to back to back last week. Thursday thanksgiving sober with the family. Friday night Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin experience sober with the wife. Followed by a beautiful day on the boat sober with my wife and kids.
Take a break from them. I’m not kidding. Just skip family holidays for one year while you work on yourself. That doesn’t mean being alone. Find an AA group. You won’t believe how warm and welcoming the people will be.
I skipped the holidays my first year and didn’t miss a thing.
Coolio and yes a lot of time, think I’ll try Krav Maga out, thanks!
Do it! It’s so much fun!

Memories are fun not getting blackout drunk and not remembering what happened and being able to wake up the next day not feeling like garbage or embarrassed or ashamed and continuing to be able to make new and good memories with your friends and loved ones
A gazillion new hobbies! Slack lining, climbing, snowboarding, trail running etc. Make a list of things you haven't done in a while or have always wanted to try and start banging them out
For my first year it was a lot of hiking/outdoor activities, working out, learning Netflix and that there are a ton of shows and importantly spending time alone and learning what self care looks like. I did more in my first year of sobriety than probably the 10 years previous combined.
Having fun and joy are close for me, so I will share a moment of pure joy this morning. I woke up to about 15 text messages (I have a group of 7 sober women I have a group chat with). One of the women was just not having it, she was lost and discouraged. I got to share my experience, give her some steps to get closer to her goal, and encourage her. In the end my words hit the nail on the head. I was overwhelmed with a wave of gratitude and filled with joy. Where else and with who else can I share some of my hardest moments and inspire breakthrough? Recovery is something special.
If you’re speaking of fun in the general societal expectation of fun I would say I have fun going to brunch with friends where everyone is sober and we get to connect.
Gosh that just brought me back to my drinking days
I’m grateful for being sober!
I see it the same but with a twist, took Dancing lessons, Hiking, Traveling, trying adventuring things. Living ,Loving Life.. who says you cant.. Just don't look Back .Move Forward.. almost 5 years Sober..
Thanks Noel
Reading and writing opens up new worlds you never could have dreamed existed.
Just being present with people I care about without the haze of alcohol. Waking up the next morning knowing what happened. So refreshing
