What has been the most useful resource for you in maintaining a sober lifestyle?

I was just seeking to understand some varied thoughts on what is effective in both being sober and maintaining that healthy lifestyle. There are many different schools of thought, and certain things work better for some than for others. Thanks!

Our sober dates are really close. Mine’s 11/10/19.

I’m an AA person. I went every day my first 6 months. Tapered that to about 5 per week up until about the two year mark. Now I’m doing 2-3 per week. I will not taper that down anymore. It feels about right. I am GSR for one and Treasurer for two others.

I do martial arts (Krav Maga, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) four nights a week. It keeps me in good shape, improves my mental state, and provides another healthy social community. I maintain a daily morning routine of readings, health screening, and prayer. That’s my jam.

I really enjoy meditation and yoga and reading Buddhist teachings. I found that now that I’m sober it helps me understand my mind in a way I didn’t before. I’m by no means perfect at any of it but it brings me to the present moment and I can let thoughts pass instead of being impulsive with them.

Creating a solid routine has given me a solid foundation to jump off from. Everything else moves around that.

Reading and writing about sobriety keeps me going strong. In a way I’m more obsessed with alcohol than ever before, but in a good way haha. Walking, yoga, and meditation are helpful too.

Some really solid stuff here, thanks. I hear a lot of talk about doing healthy activities. I personally am an AA person, and although that will always be the foundation of my recovery, setting/attaining goals along with service work has been the essence of my success in staying sober so far. Gotta stay busy, and my life has to have a purpose. Being sober just to be sober isn't enough for me. One day at a time!!
