How would you deal with encountering clients at meetings?

Why would you be worried about running into clients at a meeting? They are there for the same reason. To be honest with you I never took a therapist or a counselor seriously unless they were in recovery.

Perhaps going to meeting outside of your area.. I worked in the recovery field for a bit of time and in a way I still do.. anger management now.. so I get where your coming from when it comes down to ethics. Not everyone is going to understand client staff boundaries and that one can lose there license/certification. I personally didn’t stop attending meetings nor functions, heck without my maintenance in recovery I would have never been able to go to school.
Whenever I ran into clients I wouldn’t ignore them but I would do my best to keep minimal contact. It’s a meeting not a social gathering of some sort :man_shrugging:
Suit up show up and do you the rest will work it’s self out :+1:

Hey thanks for your input

I’ve had similar concerns. I don’t share at meetings where there are past or current clients. I’ve always been open with my clients about my recovery, so I also view it as a positive if they see me active in a community I encourage them to be a part of. I have also asked around in the community about “meetings for professionals” and have found a couple of women’s meetings specific to professional/discreet careers. Good luck!

Thanks Tommy, that's a great idea! I'll try and see if I can find any Meetings that are out of my area. Glad to hear it helped get through school!

Thanks for sharing! Did you enter recovery before or after working with your clients? Did you wait until a certain point in your recovery to disclose that?

Thank you so very much
I would have never been able to do college without my recovery

I don't work in recovery, but I am in a management role at work for a large special needs facility. I have had staff (current and past) come into the rooms and at first yes it freaked me out. Eventually I offered it up and came to the conclusion that although I don't openly discuss my recovery with everyone, I don't balk if it comes up- I'm in a position where I can help others, so I trust that who needs to know will find out or hear it thru the grapevine. I am not ashamed of being in recovery because I know who I am and how much I've grown & I don't have to hide it or be ashamed of that today

I was in recovery prior to starting in the field. I work in a residential SUD treatment facility so I bring it up when it’s relevant and only when I feel it would be helpful.
