What does “playing the tape” mean?
Playing the tape is remembering everything that happens AFTER that use. It's never just once and after you relapse and lose power over your addiction it takes you farther and farther down. Replay all the humiliating and devastating losses and desperate scenarios. Selling everything. Looking desperately for your fix at 3 am. Using water from a puddle from a shot of dope. Hangovers. Losing family and friends and jobs. Play the tape. Don't just think of how good that drink or shot or smoke might be. Play it to the end. To the lonely bitter desperate end and then choose differently. Play the tape.
