What was your breaking point?

What drove me here was because when I drink, I have the worst fights with my boyfriend. The day after I feel terrible for the things I said and did. Alcohol is turning me into a mean and angry person. I’ve decided to make the change. I’m just thankful that he’s still with me.

Alcoholism is a progressive disease. It always gets worse, never better. The consequences get worse. I didn’t get into trouble every time I drank, but every time I got into trouble I was drinking.

For me it was lying my way into getting family to babysit while I went and drained my bank account buying alcohol and drugs and ended up alone in a hotel thinking I was about to die of an overdose. Not a single person in my contacts offered to help if they even bothered to pick up. At that point I realized I had ruined everything and every relationship I had and if I were to die I would die there I would die alone. It wasn’t the legal trouble or the other consequences for me, it was my own realization that if I went any further I would have a death date not a sober date.

Emily- Sometimes we have those “eye-opening” moments and it looks like the hotel night was that for you. I’m so happy that you’re here. Congrats! One moment at a time, and one day at a time.

You’re right to look at it through a lense of death or life. I’m so happy you chose to live.
