When did you tell your parents/family? Reactions?

32 days sober. I know my parents will be supportive and proud, but also worried it will make sobriety very real/serious, potentially make them feel guilt or bad about themselves? Questions like why didn’t they know how serious it was, what could we have done differently, this makes me sad for you, etc.

For context, it’s my mom’s birthday next week, so while this news is likely the gift she’s always wanted from me, I don’t want her to dwell on the “could’ve/should’ve”. Thanks!

Don’t over think it. When it feels right to tell people you will know, and just feel it. Sobriety is your journey. The best way I found to “tell” people is just to show them, And trust me, family sees the changes in you way before you do. Just keep doing the next right thing, be gentle with yourself, and keep your head up.

you might have that reaction but that’s just coming from a place of love and concern , i think it will quickly transition to them being on board with you to support , sending you the best !

Been sober for almost a week now. I told my family on the day I decided to stop drinking. And I have been telling everyone ever since. Feels good (at least for me) to share it and not be ashamed, it's actually very satisfying...

Thank you! Timing felt right but think I was getting cold feet. Went for it and went great, so looks like I was overthinking!

Awesome! We addicts have an incredible way of creating our own downfalls in our minds. Wry glad things went well for you!

I don't think my family blames themselves. I was surprised that someone I told already knew.
