When I first started working the steps the prospect of relying entirely on a higher power was terrifying. I’ve been vehemently anti religious my entire adult life and trusting God was extremely foreign to me. However, the phrase “as we understand him” kept jumping out at me. That was the most welcoming concept of a God I’d ever heard. Doesn’t have to be one or the other, just one of your choosing. I’m still very much in my spiritual infancy but I have faith in something, that looks out for me as long as I turn my will and my energy over to it to do good things in this world. I wrote the following recently while contemplating what a higher power means to me:
My interpretation of a higher power:
An apple tree…
An apple tree is still an apple tree, no matter what you call it, be a fish, a flower, a stone. The name is not important. For an apple tree, will always bear fruit if it’s watered, and nurtured, and tended to.
Hopefully this helps anyone that still has reservations about who or what they feel is at the steering wheel of the universe.
