Why does sobriety have the be so lonely sometimes when it comes to family understanding how hard it is to fight this daily. My family are all drinkers. I refuse to go to certain family functions not only for the reason of drinking but also because some of my family has not spoke to me in 2 years because I am not drinking. I am in a lose lose situation. Depression is really bad. My AA fellowship is insulted, my AA girlfriends are insulted. What can I do. I know I can’t drink again.

I'm having the same problem with family. I wish they lived closer so I wouldn't be so alone, but the drink a lot.
I have friends in AA but when this happens I lose all interest in everything. Meetings, reading. I feel like I shouldn’t do that because I know I need that but I am so down and in my own little world since Saturday.
Sobriety can definitely be lonely at times. As far as the family goes, I believe we have the right to set your boundaries. I don’t expect my family to ever really understand. I have difficulty with this as well. I’m ok if they have a drink with dinner, but I don’t feel safe when they show up with a red solo cup, and then proceed to have a few more drinks with dinner. The conversation turns to
, and I don’t feel comfortable. I don’t want to be the drunk police so I don’t say anything. I just choose to skip a lot of family dinners. They probably think I’m judging them or want to control their drinking. Maybe I am? Bottom line is they have a choice to drink or not drink, just as I have a choice to show up or not. The end result is I’m disconnected from my family. This also happens with friends and neighbors. I’m ok if everyone is having a drink or 2, but when they start getting sloppy, it’s no longer any fun for me. I just told my wife that I’m not enjoying going out on the boat anymore if it’s going to be a “party”. It’s supposed to be a nice relaxing time for me. If I have to be the only one staying sober and being responsible l…screw that! So, yeah it can get lonely.
It’s good that you are aware of your isolation. Take action and talk to your AA friends. They will understand. You’re not alone
I love your advice. I am ok when we got out and hubby drinks. But to go to family functions where red cups are all over the place I can’t. I honestly don’t trust myself especially at my nephews house he has a bar everywhere inside outside it flows continuously. I try to explain to my husband so many times that I am not comfortable plus the fact the my own nephew doesn’t talk to me. Oh he is an alcoholic. Both parents dead from alcohol and drugs. No big surprise he drinks a lot. I have been in a bad place this weekend, no meetings, nothing but this needs to stop and I need to push forward. Thank you. We got each other. Thank god.
When I quit drinking, I got involved in a sober living group and we went camping, white water rafting, went on hikes etc… My family didn’t understand but I had to let go of the people that were poisonous to my life and some of them were family. I am reconnecting with family but with our redefined relationship.
