Why does this make me so uncomfortable?

Are there sober meetups/support groups that aren’t like this or do I have to start being into meditating, songs, and poems? I want sober friends…and I don’t know what my sober vibe is but this isn’t it

I'm not sure what you're saying or looking for. You don't have to do anything.

I am not bashing these events. I think they’re great for people who benefit from them and enjoy them but I want to go to meetups that revolve more around just simply meeting like minded individuals…I’m just not personally into the whole group meditation and poem readings

Now I understand. I'm not big into it either but don't know where else to go.

Never seen this before. Wouldn’t let it bother you.

I find that just connecting/chatting with people on here is a great start, without any prerequisites or anything - hope you find something that helps!

Agreed

I just joined and I was literally just searching around for group events, etc. I haven't seen anything so far but I haven't navigated around too much yet. I'd be interested in meetups/events with fun activities, excursions, or similar. Most get togethers seem to revolve around alcohol. I wanna do all the fun stuff with others minus the alcohol. Is that a thing? :woman_shrugging: Trips? Vacays? Sober parties? I'm up for anything really.:sweat_smile:

Yes!! That’s what I am interested in! I guess I was wondering if it was already a thing and I just didn’t know where to look :woman_shrugging:t3:

If it's not a thing, we should make it one. Lol. I'm sure there is. But it would be nice if it were a national/world wide thing that was easily accessible to find. Kinda how there are sober cruises, etc. But just fun events and get togethers. If im missing the events on the page, point them out if you find them.

I have never been to a meeting like that. I shopped around until I went to a meeting that felt like home. You need to find the place you feel you belong too

The real question is : are you looking for a life of sobriety where in you don’t feel over powered by your addiction OR are you just looking for a break from drinking or using ?
If the later, then your pursuit makes absolute sense. There are several sober meet up’s and activities with sober people to do .. check out www.thephoenix.org for example.

Now if you’re looking for the former, then I think some of these groups and Lea fiches are just a part of teaching folks coping skills as well as a break from just the big book or speaker series. I personally am not into group poem reading and would rather meditate by myself. However, many don’t know how to , right? Hence easing them into alternative yet holistic healing modalities is more akin to having to do boot camp or basic training before you’re given a gun and uniform and asked to go into battle. This is just my opinion.

Proud of you for wanting to seek a sober support group. It is the same for me. It does feel very lonely at times.

One thing that I have going on outside of my whole sobriety quest is playing games on zoom or discord. Half the time we just hang out and chat. Do they let us post discord servers here? I have one.

Yes.. there are other support groups that incorporate more than stuff you just mentioned.
I attend a 12step fellowship.. within that fellowship we practice living life on life’s terms without the drink/pill/fix. Part of living life on life’s terms is to have fun and socialize.
I myself haven’t stayed clean to be miserable.

Some activities: Conventions of a thousand plus people, dances, camp outs, river floats, beach trips, holiday events/celebrations etc.
When I cleaned up I had to learn how to live before living I basically had to be open minded.
I’m not sure if I completely understood your post, so sorry if I misinterpreted it. :hugs:

I get you, you aren’t alone. I partied for 30 years, lots of bad habits, but I lived the high life. It’s not that it wasn’t fun, it was killing me. I thought I was super hip and yes, lots of the sober stuff sounded cringe at first (much still does). I go to AA for support but don’t work their program. I don’t know the answer but I’m old, I’m ok laying low and chilling. For a younger person, I’m not sure how you readjust. Be patient, give things a chance, sometimes you have to cringe inside, but you are sober, that’s what matters most. The rest will come.

I grew up a DeadHead and there is a sober scene called the Wharf Rat, thankfully it allows me to still do the cool music I like but avoid the drugs and booze (in a very drug heavy scene). If there is something you are really into try finding other sober people in that scene. Ask here or even make an FB page … sober fans of (whatever)…. You might find likeminded souls without the cringe

Tommy, I pinged the admins and they said it’s all ok. I put the link to a discord server I just built for this community. The link is in my profile. Feel free to jump on. It called The Wrong Canary.
