Why is it soo hard to just be sober…. Today my son turns 12. I started smoking weed at the age of 10. God knows I want to stop but he also knows this has been my biggest problem. How do you try to help yourself if you hate yourself now. I’m my biggest critic and it’s just sad I cant do it. Functional addicts are just living in the devils den. Im not giving up but its getting old.
It’s a one day at a time journey. It is not easy. Find yourself a support group and talk. The worst place an addict trying to quit can be is alone in his own head. It’s hard to search fir help but we need to. Pick up that phone. Chat on here do things that make you happy. Pick up the Bible flip three pages and just stop and read a little. Whenever I would do that it would seem to hit home and ease my mind. Good luck my friend. Your not alone.
Jesus
Gotta start by working the steps, getting you a sponsor and building a support group that's able to be present in your life. Read the literature and don't pick up the first one. One is to many and a thousand is never enough.
I don't believe in a functional addict, they just hide there problems better and stay in denial about having any. You seem to have a gift of desperation, so start working a program. It's about finding a god of your understanding and you will get there. But first begin with step 1, then go to 2 and so forth. It's spiritual progress not perfection. I started using at age 8 so I can definitely relate. The bible may be a good religious book but I'm trying to find recovery not religion. Idk about you so start with working a program and really be honest and work it like it teaches us n maybe you might grab a hold of something that changes you inside. Best wishes to you and your family!
Hi David, what are you doing to help support your sobriety? If you want something you’ve never had, you will have to do things you have never done.
I also called myself a functioning alcoholic but as Nate mentioned it's denial period. I'm not a 12 stepper but go to meetings, it helps. I believe in getting educated on what alcohol does to the body and keeps you hooked. You might start by reading Alcohol Explained by William Porter. It's easy to read and understand. Best of luck and reach out anytime
Another book The Addictive Brain by Thad A Polk
Hang in there, one moment at a time and reach out, you’re not alone
I started with weed at 10 but didnt think anything of it and still dont but at the age of 16 my moms half brother introduced me to speed then I went to meth and within 2 1/2 years I was in such a low place in life and mom couldn’t help me so I ended up going to federal prison 3 days before my 19th birthday. It honestly saved my life and fast forward to todays current situation I know Im heading down the same path. I cant stop on my own even more now because Im stuck in my victim and resentment plus the hate for myself dont help! Ive done rehab and aa meetings. I’ll stay sober for a while but then I forget or choose to forget check
David. You are a miracle. The things that happened so that you would come to be were perfectly aligned. And you are still alive. You are being given a chance to change your life. Make sobriety your top priority, that’s the only way I was able to get sober. I had to make it the most important thing in my life, and when I did I slowly stacked days and got my life back together. You are worth it.
Stay with it, David!
Na meetings will help! Meet lots of people.
Literally one day at a time. Most times especially in early recovery, minutes at a time. I have times where I think a drink would be fine maybe if I just have a little bit. But a little bit turns into a whole lot. Next thing I know I’m kicked out my halfway house and back in detox. Today, my sister accidentally asked me if I wanted some alcohol to drink and then as she realized what she asked, I was like no I’m good. She then smiled at me and said “I’m proud of you!” She easily forgot that alcohol was one of my DOCs and I could’ve manipulated her into letting one drink be okay. But that small moment is a BIG STEP!! So believe in the moments. They come and they go.
Your functional until your not !!
Im getting there.
Be proud of those moments. Its tough and I have to want it. I don’t know why I dont. The more I run from the issues the worse the thought of stopping is. Facing and accepting is SUPER TOUGH for me. Im my worst critic
