Why is there so much stigma surrounding marijuana.. meanwhile nicotine

Why is there so much stigma surrounding marijuana.. meanwhile nicotine, caffeine and whatever ssri meds and sleep meds they throw at you in treatment are not only acceptable but encouraged during treatment and at AA meetings. I’ve heard the old cop out about mind altering substances.. this is one of my biggest problems with the 12 step programs. Marijuana has almost no side effects, meanwhile I challenge anyone to look at the side effects of any pharmaceutical ssri or sleeping med they are on. If we are being honest about things that are mind altering.. then doesn’t it seem hypocritical to exclude weed as a natural medicine, and put it in a category with drugs like alcohol and meth, I know it keeps me out the bottle and off glass, it also never made my life unmanageable, I never spent my last dollar or did some shady nonsense to get it. I can’t be the only one that feels this way.

Reminder if you comment, please be respectful, and remember what is normal to the spider is chaos to the fly.

Hey man, I know several people who are Cali sober. It works for them. Your recovery is YOUR recovery. Do what works. For me… I can’t do it. I would always take it to excess. No matter what it is. But if it works for you… who cares what others think.

My man

I thought everything you just said for several years. Unfortunately I just never learned anything new and never found what I really needed until I got off everything. I’m now off weed, coffee and prescriptions as well, and I agree with you they are not all the same. I am multiply addicted and was once told “Deal with the ones that can kill you first.” And so I did. And eventually got to the rest, which was needed to reach the level of recovery I wanted.
All the best to you, it sounds like you want to be free and I support your journey 100%.

Recovery is not a one size fits all! I’ve smoked a handful of times since I’ve been sober from alcohol. Honestly, it allowed me to calm down enough to sleep after being tortured with nightmares. I’ve never started craving it, or anything close to what I experienced with alcohol.

Thank you so much for posting this!! I am also “Cali sober” and often feel hesitant to talk about it out of fear of being judged.

I see no issue, do it up. I love that last part what is normal to the spider lol.

What's normal for the spider spells death for the fly. That's how the fly gets caught.
My thoughts are simple. Why are you trying with a chemical to alter your mood or feelings.
I firmly believe they legalized it for the tax dollars the big reason they ended prohibition. Can't stop it so might as well capitalize on it. That has nothing to do with medical era reasons

Thanks for the feedback. I get judged over it too. But I feel better after reading all these comments.

This is always such a hot topic. I enjoy the fellowship of AA, and work the 12 steps. I was also a huge smoker of weed, and my life was completely unmanageable. So for me no weed…unfortunately :joy:. However, you say it doesn’t make your life unmanageable. If it works for you, then go for it. I know I would if I could. As for AA, I don’t think it’ll ever be acceptable in that program. You may have to accept that rather than having them trying to accept smoking weed. Their is an unwillingness in AA to change, much like the Church has their issues. It can be frustrating, but it works for the majority. I can see a Cali sober group branching out one day. Regardless, stay healthy and happy my brother :peace_symbol:

Justification is fear based concerning judgment is also.
Just saying you might want to ask yourself what need is the sedative marijuana fulfilling.
I try to do what they do so I can get what they got. Living happy joyous and free

My question was about why the hypocrisy… if we’re talking mind altering substances. Coffee and cigarettes make the list too. As well as whatever meds your taking. Unless it’s a a heart medication or something that keeps you alive, most things are mind altering. No one at any meetings mentions that fact.. meanwhile the stigma persists. AA NA just make it worse. Meanwhile big pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies profit and ok suboxone and subutex and in the community that is sober.

Why do people need coffee to wake up and trazadone to sleep. My question was about the hypocrisy of all this. And it the hypocrisy that I can’t and want abide in NA AA

You're spitting hairs now. If you're looking to justify your using it doesn't much matter to me.
I'm entitled to my opinion. I can not condone the use of any mind altering substance other than medicinal reasons.
If you have a problem with any organization take it up with them or find another organization

I gave up weed at the same time as drinking and it has been good for me — just my story

The reality is there’s hypocrisy in everything! Coffee and cigs has been a large part of the culture and tradition of 12 step programs. Weed…not so much lol. I’m not saying it’s right. I actually agree with you. I love my AA friends and meetings, but there are a few things that I’d like to see change with the times that would help benefit more diversity. I’ve got kids that are very young adults. I know they would not feel comfortable in AA, and that irks me

I can’t use cannabis. I drink coffee everyday. I don’t drink coffee after lunch. I’m 3 years sober. If you fall out with a group and want to smoke pot you can choose to do that. Do I consider a marijuana user clean and sober? I don’t define sobriety of others.

Substances are neither good nor bad, it’s how it’s used. My chronically ill sister has had a feynt patch for years. For her it’s good as prescribed. Listen to your doctor. Mine knows my history and still recommended a MJ card for insomnia. I use it as prescribed. I still very much consider myself sober.
