late 18th century: from Latin, ‘soil’ (humus)
Humility is also "staying grounded", having one's feet on the ground, being connected to our essence, connected to earth; also electromagnetically "ground". "Staying right sized" is knowing my place in the larger picture, the cosmos, and being one among many.
"Humus" as decaying matter also signifies the transience of all things, life itself.
