Yesterday, I told my kids that I'm an addict. My older boy doesn't want to talk to me right now and my younger boy is staying with me for my days. It was tough, but I showed up and am doing the work. A long road ahead to rebuild trust, but took the first step. If you can relate or have suggestions, I'm being in consultation.
How old are your kids? I went away to treatment and my oldest wouldn’t talk to me the entire time I was there after admitting that I had a problem when I got back 45 days later I looked different I carried myself different and the trust started coming back I started telling her how many days sober I was and was completely honest with her! Still rebuilding but it’s been almost a better relationship
For me, my Son knows I’m an Alcoholic. He’s seen me too many times drunk. He’s also, seen my suicidal tendency. I haven’t told him about my Drug use. In AA I have to use my best judgement or GOD’s willpower to keep some of the things that could further damage or hurt others. I don’t want to hurt anyone or anything moving forward. Now if my Son where to Ask me about it I mostly will tell him the truth cause honesty is a huge part of my journey.
As far as my recovery is going, I don’t have to say anything about it to my son, I show him with my actions. We went to two meetings this weekend. I’m very grateful he’s on my side with my recovery. Plus if he’s anything like me, there’s a chance he can become an alcoholic later in life and I want him to know there’s a better way now. My son is 15 years old. I’m a grateful recovering alcoholic and Dad!
Thank you for sharing.
Keep up the good work. Show you kids action. Words mean nothing to them…
Thanks, Mike. I appreciate those words. My older boy (14) called and cursed me out, because he saw my ex crying and is pissed that I've re-traumatized her. I texted him this morning that I'll continue to reach out every morning and evening.
Thanks, Jillian. They are 14 and 12. My older boy is more like their mom...a highly sensitive person. My younger boy is more like me...logical and less emotional, though I've been working on my emotions these past 4+ years. I know that actions over time build trust, so one day at a time. This is another good way to feel supported outside of my fellows and therapists.
Yessir. Actions over time build trust. I appreciate your story as well, knowing it can get better.
Yeah my oldest is 11 next week and she is soo much like me she shuts down and doesn’t want to deal with emotions so we are both working on that!! Yeah reaching out here for support helps too
Welcome Sam! Yes, life will get better when we work our program. If we don’t consider a personality change we will continue down that dark path.
