Yesterday was extremely hot here in Portland, Oregon where I'm at.
I don't have a place with ac.. I live in my little camper van at the moment since I'm only here working a seasonal job for the months of July & August and have multiple house sitting gigs lined up with the exception of this week (of course it's a record heatwave week
)
So I broke down and I chose a budget motel but didn't realize that it was an actual hub of prostitution and drug dealing and such a horribly run down place that nothing worked, everything reeked of cigarette smoke and urine, the room was filthy, I could go on about how deplorable the conditions were...
By the time I checked in it was 3:00... The hottest part of the day. I was dazed and a little confused and just sat in front of your typical little hotel room air conditioning unit that looked like it needed to be replaced more than a decade ago and as it screamed loudly and struggled to produce even a little bit of cool, I cried. I felt like a person at rock bottom. I've been sober for nearly a month and a half now, and the thing is, I'm not desperate - just frugal. There are ZERO rooms (including the horror show that I chose) under a hundred bucks a night here in Portland. This is not an easy place to be living in a camper van.
But I still did not drink.
Once I came around to my senses the shitty ac unit conked out. I walked up to the front desk and gave the guy running that horrible place a piece of my mind and demanded a refund. Then my partner called up a friend who offered to host us at their place for these next few hot days that we're in between house sitting gigs.
There was socializing and we ordered pizza (and everyone except me was drinking booze of course)
And I drank cold seltzer water and kombucha.
And they let us sleep in a very cozy room with a very comfy bed.
My pup was so miserable yesterday in the heat and she was incredibly happy to sleep in a chilly air controlled space.
And I didn't drink.
And today's easier.
Sometimes getting by with a little help from a friend is the way to go.
