Addiction wasn't the problem, Addiction is the response to the problem.
I don't think it's exclusively that, but in most cases, yes for sure.
Interesting take on it for sure. Addiction was my response to not having the skills to deal with problems that turned into the coping mechanism I used as an excuse to facilitate not having to deal with anything but no he addiction… or something like that.
Agree! Alcohol was my solution to my “me problem”. I wasn’t an honest person. I thought I was. I was angry at the world. My thinking got the best of me. Also, I had a spiritual malady. I was soul sick.
To fix the real problem, “Me” I had to under go a complete psychic change. That means I must get real honest with myself. I must change my behaviors, my reaction to my thoughts and then start giving back to life. Helping others and being of service are the ways I do that. Journaling my day and gratitude list has been a big help. Reading books and posts. Meditation and prayer. Praying for others and the knowledge to overcome all of my situations.
And most of all letting go of what I want. Accepting life on life’s terms.
I'm in the middle.
Oh! Thought provoking. Let me think about it, and come back.
Agree. I think we are all searching for something and used a substance to cope
Exactly! I’ve thought about it and come back to reply 3 times…but still nothing
Well… I see it as “addiction IS the problem because it is my maladaptive hair-trigger response to any and all problems”
AA says resentment is biggest offender to an addict drinking or using.
Whatever the resentment is, it's obviously not worth your life. There are people that care about you deeply and they would be hurt if you hurt yourself over some stupid resentment.
It's weird bc a problem to one person isn't a big deal to another. You can have a super stressed out person dealing w long childhood trauma, and a well off young person that deals w pressures of society to be a certain way or "fit in". Stuff like that - it stretches the spectrum of the human experience.
100%… I know my problem was lack of self worth and not knowing how to have a healthy relationship.
I agree 100%
Thanks for the post. An interesting topic that I’m still developing an opinion on. For me I feel like the problem is a problem and the addiction is also a problem.
I'm somewhere in between. Part of my addiction was fueled by some problems. But... My addiction had been around for longer than I had most of those problems.
Agree. Trauma and depression can be difficult things to deal with and drinking pushes that painful world away. It becomes the safe place in the storm of life. And it can be frightening to leave that safe place and you can get trapped there if you’re not careful.
At first, sure. Then the addiction is the actual problem.
Drugs and alcohol are a symptom of the problem.
That was definitely my situation. It didn't start out that way but when that ball started rolling it was almost impossible to stop until I finally hit the wall.
Addiction can be the result of learned responses to problems.
