Why did you choose to become sober?

My liver mostly

Because I have known for years that I’m self-medicating in order to cope, and yet seeing over and over again that things aren’t getting better. They’re getting worse the longer I’ve put off permanent sobriety.

I never hit rock bottom, the bottom came up and hit me. After 10 years in the bottle, I drove home over two hours, drunk, armed, and had my kids in the car. When I pulled into my driveway I had realized what I just did. And I haven’t had a drink since.

@jennifer134256 said it best...I was self medicating, and it just made it worse

I finally got arrested for DUI after passing out luckily in a parking lot. After blacking out numerous times before. I always convinced myself I was ok because I didn't drink and drive. What scared me the most was the thought of the damage and hurt I could have caused had I blacked out while still driving. I'm not afraid of dieing but God forbid I hurt someone. I still have the state mandated breathalyzer in my car and now sober just 7 days short of a yr

We need it to be alive and well.

That would be a hard pill to swallow. I'm glad you swallowed the pill and are giving yourself the healthy life you deserve.

I became sober so that I could have a relationship with my nieces and nephews.

I became suicidal. I was in a hole I could not get out. Luckily w did, if I didn’t there is no way I would be alive today.

I was tired of the same patterns. Not dealing with reality with a clear head was not facing my issues.

Every time I drink, I get sucked down into nightly drinking, soon followed by blackouts. I’m on day 1 again after a tough 10 day relapse after divorce. I feel so good today, and I’ll be better tomorrow. Motivated to exercise first time in 2 weeks . Head is so clear… (last drink was Sunday)

Because my mental health got worse...not better and I wanted to live and not die

I chose sobriety so I was no longer dishonoring my daughter by using her death to destroy myself now she can live life through me!

Such powerful sharing! I was confronted by my family when I showed up on Mother’s Day drunk 15 years ago. And I decided to accept help and dramatically change my life bc I was miserable, hurting myself and others, and I couldn’t figure out how to live life.

I chose sobriety because I did not like the person I had became. I used the people I loved and cared for to help continue my habit and not caring for the consequences of the actions I did. It begun to scare me, how much I didn’t care even about myself and what would happen to me if I continued down that path.

Similar to what many say, I had hit the point where I was self medicating so much and doing so much to fuel my addictions that I was looking at either overdosing or going to jail and there were definitely times where I was wishing to overdose just to not have to feel what I was constantly feeling

2 rehabs and 1 DUI didn't get me sober. Nor did 3x in jail . After hitting bottom I woke up 1 morning in a cold sweat and had a moment of clarity. My head was finally clear and it was a terrifying and humbling position. I was alone in my beautiful country house and my young daughters were home in the city with their mom. I also realized I had not been able to run my business properly for several years. I took a look in the mirror and I saw desperation in my eyes. 10 1/2 years later I am humbly sober. I have built my business back, am very close with my teenage daughters and am able to send them away to top colleges. None of this would be possible without AA and my sobriety. It saved my life. Life is good, not perfect, but good!
