Did anyone else have an issue with isolating? I am a few days away from six months sober and I feel like I have isolated alot more lately.
Hi Jason! Congrats
on soon to be 6 months! I think a lot of us can say isolation was/is a part of our journey... my advice is to try and push through it and take the time to try and learn to be okay being alone. Find something you enjoy doing and practice it to keep your mind/body & soul occupied. No room to ruminate thoughts of the what ifs, should haves or whatever it may be thats counterproductive to your sobriety. Eventually, you'll find peace & content in solitude. Keep it up though! you're doing great and 6 months is something to be proud of
Dude yeah… big time
It’s not easy to jsut like make new types of friends.
You’re the man for going 6 months though that’s good
I’ve got 30 sober years, and from my perspective, isolation is a relative term. You are doing this to yourself. You can make a choice - 1) be alone and isolate yourself or 2) be aware of this tendency and surround yourself with good, supportive people.
Sometimes. It can be hard when you feel like everyone else is going out and drinking is involved. That’s why I got a very tight group of friends in AA early on . That way we all could hang out and do sober things together
I’m right there with ya. I think if you’re ok with it, then just go with it. When you’re ready to come out of your shell, you will.
Do you think your isolating yourself more lately or is it possible you are realizing how isolated you had become while drinking? I suffered from loneliness while I was drinking for sure but was really aware of how cut off I had become, and sober loneliness was a whole new beast. Kudos to you for being aware of a potential issue before it happens! If you feel like your isolating you probably are. If you are on the fence about reaching out to your people you probably should.
I agree with Joe.
It's all about choices. Sometimes we need to be alone. I'm very much an introvert. My wife definitely is not an introvert.
Although there's nothing wrong with being alone at times it can be a negative in early sobriety. We can get ourselves into trouble real quick with stinking thinking. At 6 months of sobriety you're better off getting to as many meetings as possible and hang out with others who are or who have been where you are at. Eventually you'll find peace with solitude and with others.
I have become the flakiest friend of all time. I work, go to school, and spend time by myself. This is not who I was before becoming sober, but I am not drinking, so that is a good thing.
If you’re worried about isolation, then get to a meeting
First and foremost congratulations brother I was in the same situation as you til I made new sober friends
Resentment is the number one offender...Isolation is number two...be careful, call someone and get to a meeting asap!
Cocoons are my fav
At least you have the awareness to recognize that you are self isolating. You are making an important step by reaching out. A lot of people early in sobriety wouldn't be able to spot that. I am still early in myself and find that I do the same thing. Just keep reaching out and stay in touch with peers and your sponsor especially when you don't feel like it. Eventually it will become easier and easier. Stay strong. You are doing amazing!!!
Definitely been very isolated but I am starting to venture out of my bubble. Even thinking about asking a friend over for sandwiches
. Joined the gym too although that doesn’t really count because I just put headphones on there anyways and don’t socialize. I’m sure it will get better we just have to be willing to be open to trying new ways to socialize. But I definitely relate!!
I did because I didn’t trust myself and would go to any lengths! Your looking after you
Yep. Happened to me too.
Yes. I have to wake up in 6 hours to go to work after 3 days off and I'm looking forward to it. I get to see people again. Hooray.
