Do you allow alcohol in your house? I recently relapsed

Do you allow alcohol in your house? I recently relapsed but my boyfriend’s siblings are visiting this weekend to help with house projects. Apparently he told them he would pay them in beer ( I didn’t realize this) and I feel uncomfortable with being around drinking so close to relapse. But I don’t feel like I can ask them to not drink since they are helping us. Thoughts? Advice??

Hi Cat, it’s your house, you set the rules. He could give them beer to take home and you guys can enjoy non-alcoholic beverages while in your home. It can be hard asserting things like this early in sobriety, but it is key to protect your sobriety with everything. Another relapse or feeling uncomfortable yourself is not worth making them feel comfortable. Take care of yourself first.

Dose your boyfriend you have a drinking problem? It he dose that’s not cool! You need to tell him fine pay them in beer but after there done working. You know it’s going to be a beer fest more than work

I look at it two ways. One you should be open and honest with your boyfriend about your situation so you can come up with a solution instead of a problem. Secondly I don't think your boyfriend should have allowed that to go down like that. Especially if he is fully aware of your current change. You should never allow yourself to be tempted more than you can't handle..

Thanks :two_hearts:

Yes, fair. With the recent relapse I’m feeling especially vulnerable

Yes. Thanks. I wish he hadn’t promised drinking be part of them visiting. He knew I was getting sober but thought that liquor was the problem, not beer. I said anything is a trigger

I couldn’t live with someone who was a regular drinker, but I’m cool with a friend bringing six pack over while we work on a project. He asked if it was ok and it doesn’t bother me. But we all have to do what works for us.

Personally, I can’t have my drink of choice in the house. When I still lived with my boyfriend, I didn’t want to ‘infringe on the fun’ so I said it was cool to have booze at the house. And I relapsed. Since I’ve lived in a new house with non/minimal drinkers that never have booze here? Way easier.
It’s totally up to you. It sounds like you know this will potentially trigger you to drink. If you want to keep your sobriety, let them know that beer at the house isn’t an option and offer up some different solutions.
Sending you lots of good sober vibes!:raised_hands:t3:

Thanks so much Kate!

Well you do have to be able to be around drinkers and alcohol it’s part of life. You can’t hide in a sober cave. That being said you can definitely limit your exposure to those type environments. I would talk to your boyfriend about how you feel and see if you can come up with a solution. Maybe after the work is done he takes them out for a few pops. Just sayin’
