Does anyone have tips on things to do at night

Does anyone have tips on things to do at night when you’re trying to avoid drinking. I’m on 30 days and the hardest part is nighttime and dealing with the boredom and loneliness. I’m usually good all day and then once nighttime hits I have to remind myself that drinking isn’t the thing to do.

Find some hobbies. I've picked up a ton since I began my sober journey. Arts/crafts, writing, cooking, woodworking, I built a guitar, I started a fish tank, etc. Just find something you like and will take you a while to complete. You just have to immerse yourself in whatever it may be. Boredom is a death sentence for myself. Good luck!

Read books, go to meetings, join hobbies/activities (I.e. pickle ball, yoga or bowling leagues), watch movies, eat ice cream, listen or play music, call people in your sober network, go to bed early and get up earlier, work out… I imagine the evenings are the toughest for most of us. There is no right or easy answer. Hang in there, Jas!

Meetings and books are always good. There are a ton of different programs that offer meetings: AA, The Luckiest Club, Tempest, SMART Recovery, Recovery Dharma, Refuge Recovery, Celebrate Recovery, The Sober Faction.

Agree with each awesome suggestion and would like to add podcasts to the mix, especially if anyone deals with insomnia. I realize that sleep experts advise to put your phone away , not stare at screens a few hours before bed-while as someone who has dealt with insomnia for years, sober podcasts help to soothe my anxiety and help me to feel proud of the choice to remain sober. Very awesome regarding your 30 days. Congratulations, Jas!

Drink orange juice, eat candy and a lot of both. It’s a simple thing but works in the beginning.

I make sure I have a glass of juice or a mocktail or sparkling water beside me every night. That way I had something to sip on like normal that is not alcohol. Keeping my hands busy has been important too!! I try to write or color or knit or text or do my nails. Anything to distract myself when the witching hours are upon me!!

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:I won’t tell your dentist you said this.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
I was at the dentist yesterday and was afraid she was going to ask me about my sugar intake. Just like I used to be with my doctor about alcohol consumption.:joy::joy:

Yes I’ve started eating just a little chocolate at night! It actually helps a lot!

Yes I always need to be doing something with my hands and not just watching tv or something. Good advice!

Good advice because I’ve started taking trips to the gas station just to get out for a drive and grab some chocolate

Some thing when you eat chocolate you don’t want to drink. At least for me

I have a cup of tea and a “large” cookie :joy: my kids have commented on how the cookies keep replenishing themselves magically. Feels so good hitting the pillow sober !
