Dreams and hungover?

So I’m almost to a week of not drinking and I’ve been drinking a lot of water to try and flush my system. I keep having dreams that I was drinking and waking up in a panic and today I woke up feeling hungover. Anyone else go through this?

Congratulations on almost that full week! Yes. It's definitely common to have these dreams at times. Our brains need to heal, and as it heals, there will be some very vivid dreams like this. They will go away soon. Maybe still have one once in a while. Last time for me was over two years ago

Hi Liz, that is very normal. I had a few months of vivid using dreams and brain fog. It wasn’t every night but often enough I called my doctor. Keep in mind your brain and body need to rewire it’s self. Just keep hydrated, and maybe go get your bloodwork done to find out if you are deficient on vitamins. I was way low on D and B12. This to will pass. Just don’t go back to drinking! It will get better!

I’m past my 90 days and still get those from time to time. Another thing I noticed in the first few weeks was very intense negative emotions coming out in dreams, stuff I always just buried in my subconscious when using. I began to think if this as my body cleansing itself of bad juju. Embrace it and chronicle all this in a journal!

Completely normal. Personally I'd rather be drunk in my dreams than when I'm awake. Waking up is so much easier than sobering up again. And way less calories too.

I can’t say for sure that it is the same for you, but I had a realization about that sober hangover feeling. Drinking so consistently for so long really blurred the lines in my head between hangovers, and the completely normal ‘just not feeling great this morning’, that everyone gets. I also had to discover that waking up in my late 30s just isn’t as pleasant as it was in my 20s. In my head it was all part of the daily hangovers, so I never acclimated.
It definitely gets easier though. Your body will start bouncing back, and as your mind does, sleep will become more restful. That makes waking up feeling really shity, much less common.

Thanks, I thought it was weird. I had a taste in the back of my mouth like I did when I was drinking. I’m glad that it will get better. Thanks for sharing that with me

No problem. Hang in there.

Very common.
I’m always greatly relieved when I know it was just a dream and I am still sober.
I am a miracle today.

Never had the dreams at first, but about 6 months in maybe I finally did - and in it I was feeling SUPER guilty and Pi$$ed off!
Once I realized that it was a dream, I laughed at myself but felt good afterwards.
No "hangover" feeling though, you got me on that one! I'm sure there's some psychology behind it.

If you were a professional baseball player then retired. Would you not dream/daydream about playing ball. It’s the same concept with drinking. Try to look at it as a freebie.

You are exactly where you are supposed to be!! Congratulations!! Stay out of your head as best you can and keep it simple...take it moment by moment if you have to.

Yes that’s normal to have dreams of drinking. Just remember you only have 24 hours think about. Make them good by going to meetings or reading/meditating. I think reaching out like you did is a good thing. You have lots of support here. Stay strong

I initially had a lot of using dreams. I would even wake up with a headache or my mouth tasting funny. I have to check the driveway for my car and make sure I’m in my own bed. My sober coach and therapist said it’s normal and will likely decrease with more sobriety. Writing about them does help me calm down faster. We’re here for you!
