How do you deal with friends asking you to go

How do you deal with friends asking you to go out drinking after you’ve told them, repeatedly, that you quit?

You’ve set your boundaries. Excellent. They’re not respecting them. Boo. Now you have to enforce.

I’ve been in the bar scene for almost 20 years…. Most of my friends are bar/industry folks I know it doesn’t work for everyone. For me I can go to the bar and drink a club soda salted rim w lime. I only go to bars where my friends work (I’m not going to a “risky” environment and be supporting someone I don’t know) they will only serve me that or a Roy Rogers…. I always leave before “gremlin” hour and my friends are super cool w me not drinking. I used to use the DD excuse but I gave up driving totally so now I just say sorry man I’m sober and 99% of people are cool w it. There was one guy who got aggressively mad bc I wouldn’t let him buy me a beer so I let him do it to calm him down n gave it to the acoustic musician playing. Then again the bar isn’t my trigger bc I see it as work. Sitting at home alone is my trigger, I just want to crack open a bottle of wine.

Ahhh, you stop thinking their friends maybe and start making new ones?

If they don’t respect the boundaries you have set then it’s time to stop talking to them. I had to block a few numbers in early sobriety when people just didn’t get it.

People are different but many (myself included) had to separate myself from all of my former life. There’s no way I could still socialize with the same crowd. It’s lonely but I’m sober

Agree with setting boundaries. COVID is a good excuse to not go out and if you want to and feel safe to do so, “I can drink, but not alcohol!”

It has been helping me to grow a community in sobriety

Yah I’m in agreement with most replies here. If they can’t appreciate that you want to change your life for the better than they maybe aren’t the best friends to hang around

Sometimes you have to let people go if your sobriety is your main priority. I had to.

You tell them no is no and if they can't except it tell them to it the road

I’m not saying you do this but I recently got my first dui and almost died in the process. It scared me so bad I got a new phone and decided that I choose who is in my life. Before this I was a bit of an extrovert and had a lot of close relationships! Now after the accident I have my parents and one friend. But that is my choice. I surround myself with people that will lift me up for my choices. Not tear me down to their so called level

People normally run a way when you tell them you are in a program.like aa .stay sober.don’t budge. Stand your ground. Aa :dromedary_camel:

You need to put yourself into positive situations to succeed in your goals. This probably means making new friends. I hangout at the gym but do what you feel is right for you. Keep your mind focused and enjoy yourself to the fullest.
