How do you get your family to understand that you will never be cured of this disease. I can’t fight anymore
I had a heck of a time convincing my wife it wasn’t a long con getting sober. It with time and just showing her I was serious she started to believe me, and see the changes. As far as them “believing” you will not be “cured” that’s not on you. You can not make them or force them to do anything. Their thoughts are their own. You make sure your yard is clean and conscious is clear. Good luck to you. I hope you find peace.
I am trying just having 18 1/2 months you would think they would get it. My husband has met with my counselor twice he has explained things to him and it’s still the same. It’s in my family and of course I had to have it affect me. Other alcoholics in my family so they stopped talking to me. Just very lonely
Yeah, it is a lifestyle change. I am sorry you are dealing with it. My wife still blows up at me and says I “changed our family”. It can get lonely. My whole family is full of addicts. I just set boundaries and they know to respect them, I still see them and talk to them. I truly do hope it gets easier for you
Thank you. Me too because after a really bad argument I almost gave up Saturday.

If you think about it you only have to believe it. As long as they respect that you don't drink anymore and don't purposely tempt you.
It took a little time for my brother to stop asking if I wanted a drink. He was just operating on auto pilot. I just said o thanks. It finally sunk in. It's tough for other people to understand. Best of luck to you
Thank you. I have to avoid some of my family because of the amount of alcohol present. Not giving up. Thanks to my recovery team and my fellowship and places like this. Thank you.
I’ve been there. Several times
I just wish it never overpowered me. Rotten disease.
There are two prevailing schools of thought. There is the “addiction as a disease model.” This model teaches you that you were born w a disease that isn’t curable. Typically, this helps other people be more sympathetic.
The other school of thought does not want to use the addiction as a disease model because it can unintentionally make people feel that they’ll never get better, be okay, or be safe ever again. Instead, they teach that it’s an addiction. Get un addicted, and be fine.
I think a middle-ground perspective is healthy. Yes, your brain and genetics play a role, but so long as you don’t touch it, then you’re not “sick and diseased for liiiife.”
In fact, statistically, most addicts actually beat their addictions without help.
Is it true you’ll NEVER be cured? Is it true that it’s a DISEASE?
You’re at months. Maybe you’re cured! Don’t drink! Cured! Have you ever thought about it that way?
I have a problem w a genetic predisposition to getting addicted to alcohol. I have a problem with self discipline. If I can over-power the addiction, then I’m cured. Problem solved. I’m not going to live the rest of my life incessantly afraid of a disease. I’ll know my limitations now. I’ll abstain. No disease or life of fear needed.
We don’t say people who are addicted to chocolate have a disease. Or joggers. Everyone is addicted to something! But they’re not “diseased.”
I’m just trying to help you see things from a perspective that might make you feel more empowered and less eternally doomed and diseased. I hope something here helped.
I just know that this has been in my family since my dad. My brother passed away at 33 when he no functioning liver the color of a lemon. I was a so called normal drinker until I just couldn’t stop. It was to the point I was physically addicted to alcohol. I had to have it to stop shaking 3 detox and rehabs later for me I cannot pickup a drink. My last relapse stated with a big sip of bear and I was off again. I hope this makes sense. I also did drugstore and pot. All got bad and unmanageable in 2019. I would love to be able to drink like other people 1-2 and quit. Not going to happen
I hope this makes sense. Wrong glasses on. Lol
You can't control what others think (or don't think). I made the mistake of tethering my recovery to others buying in and If I thought they doubted me (gee, why would they do that?) I would give up. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND TO GOD. Let the others figure it out in their own time.
Agree with Craig. I am not trying to convince anyone of anything. I have had to create boundaries in my life to prevent myself from being triggered by the things that will trigger me. That means speaking with my parents less often, blocking my ex-wife on text and ignoring others who are not positive influences in my life. I’m not happy about all of these decisions but I know that they are what’s best for me to continue my journey in self healing. I also remind myself every day that I am human and flawed and that is absolutely ok. I show myself grace, surround myself with positive experiences and trust in the process one day at a time. God is great and so are you!
Have them watch this Dr. Montes: Neurobiology of Addiction Part 1 of 5 | The Treatment Center - YouTube
It's a series going over the Neurology of addiction by Dr Montez, very good. Helped my family understand why I can't just say no, helped me understand a lot more too and to really wrap my head around the fact that this is a disease not a moral deficiency.
Thank you everyone I will not let anything get in my way from doing what is right for me. One Day At A Time.
Some peoples minds just won’t be changed. I personally don’t know where I fall with it myself. I think the whole thing is too grey to take a stand on one side or the other. Either way…some peoples minds just won’t be changed.
I don’t care about anybody anymore but my husband. He has met twice with recovery team and actually asked me when I am going to basically be cured. I almost fell over. So I told him to go get a bottle of wine and let’s see what happens. I only have 18 months. To my still early
There’s a documentary called “Pleasure Unwoven”. Try to get them to watch it, it is truly incredible.
