I’m in the ER with intense pain and pressure from some allergic reaction and sinus pressure . I have extreme pressure in my ears and pain behind my eyes a rash under my eyes and burning in my eyes - and a very severe headache. I’m really pissed I had to come to the ER . So when I’m actually in pain but allergic to NSAIDS them giving me something is breaking my sobriety right ? Even if I don’t push or ask ? I’m so annoyed because I’m actually in pain - I know the case of surgery you can have pain meds and if they give you some you can’t refill and should only take what you need and that’s only emergency. So I guess if I’m not dying I have to suffer .

If there is nothing else that is non narcotic ..

Ugh ok . Even if I tried Tylenol and allergy meds and nasal sprays and excedrin ??

I don’t think they will give anything to me

I’m not a doctor and I don’t know how much pain you are in .. if you need it you need it just don’t abuse it .. I have a grand sponsor of mine that has 15 years clean and he had to take narcotics just to get nerves fused in his back .. people will judge and you don’t need that in your life right now, you need Support!! Remember that !!

I’m pretty sure they don’t just give out meds . I guess I’ll see what’s wrong first

Following doctors orders is not breaking sobriety. It’s receiving medical attention.

If the doc prescribes 2 Vicodin a day as needed and you finish the whole script that’s a conversation for you and your sponsor.

Being honest with the dr about your addiction is wise and necessary.

True I didn’t ask for anything and I wasn’t given anything. I believe they all know I went to detox . Because it was the same hospital network .

Hopefully there isn’t a next time for this, but if there is, you could try what I do, which is to just lead the conversation with my history and my sobriety. I do not want anything that will jeopardize all the work I’ve done. Period. I told my doctor that.

Very true. But what if it’s like 10 out of 10 pain . And I talk with them about it or they need to do surgery ever ? That’s so crazy

One time I was two weeks in and my appendix burst and I relapsed it was unfortunate . Things can happen

Hope you get better

In my opinion, if you are under the care of a doctor and being treated for something specific, this does not “break sobriety”.

The relapse occurs when you quit being honest about it. When you keep taking the meads after the pain has subsided. When you request a refill that you can live without. When the internal bargaining begins. I’ll stop tomorrow. Or Wednesday at the latest. I might as well finish this prescription because I’ve already got it.

These are the relapse indicators. If you’re aware of this and honest with yourself and your sponsor or therapist or whomever you are honest with about your disease and recovery, you can get back on the path before you cross those lines.

It is highly suggested if a DOCTOR PRESCRIBED MEDICATION TO YOU. Follow the instructions and take as necessary.
