The steps are something I’m going to work everyday for the rest of my life.

When I did my 4th step my brain was still foggy. So I did it as honestly and fearlessly as I knew how. But I also knew that I wasn’t going to remember everything. I wasn’t going to be able to articulate everything. I wasn’t aiming for perfection. I wrote out the worst shït I could remember and then went over it with my sponsor. He basically translated it for me. He identified the patterns that I had been repeating in all my relationships. And he helped me begin to see the difference between me (the person) and my actions.

I was a really good drunk, it’s already interesting app. So what basically in easy terms is this 4step?

Taking a fearless and moral inventory. People, places and things. Was i resentful, dishonest, selfish or afraid…

Emile,
I have no advice. But you are doing the work! Yay! As long as you keep doing the work, honestly, and to the best of your ability, you will reap the benefits. Step work can be rough, but it always reaps benefits.

Could I say, my mom, Altamonte Springs , death/ very selfish, never dishonest, only was afraid to quit, I was far in the game. Maybe close? Lol I have no idea how this works, I’ll find out and quit bothering sooner or later

Check out Chapter 5, “How it works”, and take a look at, “Take an inventory”. It will walk you through some basic concepts to consider when you are ready to work on Step 4. Have a good night, Mike. :call_me_hand:t4:

You to Emile, thanks again.

It took me about 2 1/2 weeks in treatment. In the real world if it takes a month, so be it. It was really eye opening for me. I saw a lot of my behaviors were forming a pattern, hence character flaws. This whole twelve step program is always revealing things to me and I’m so happy I chose the program. Keep in mind, after step four, five takes very little work. You tell someone else, usually your sponsor. Mine compiled a list of character flaws, in case I missed any. I always heard how bad step 4 was so I dreaded it. However, once I got started it just flowed out. Just remember, you are never finished with step 4. I continue to take inventory everyday. If something shows up on my nightly four times I do a four column inventory on that person, place etc. I do steps 10 and 11 daily to keep myself in check. Good luck and get all of that resentment out of your system. :pray:t2:❤‍🩹

Sponsors typically encourage their sponsees to do the steps fairly quickly because when thoroughly completed, the 4th and 5th step bring about real relief. A lot of newcomers, including myself, get stuck in “justified anger.” I’m 18 months sober and just now making progress with my 4th step. Everyone is a little different. But let’s face it….the real reason we get stuck or don’t want to do it is because of the “fear” surrounding this step. But again, it’s the first step in the sequence that has us do some actual work. Putting pen to paper and looking at ourselves, our behaviors, etc. Not everyone wants to do that kind of work. The founders of AA had alcoholics, typically within “days” of being newly sober, complete this step. It’s the individual alcoholic who drags the process out. Again, referring to myself. My sponsor has been pretty gentle with me because that’s what I need for now. And again, the steps are a suggestion. And it’s not like it’s a race or anything to get it done. We don’t “graduate” or get some type of certificate for completing the steps. If we are doing the work, then we are blessed with the gift of sobriety on a daily basis.
