I relapsed over the weekend I feel weak, disappointed with myself, depressed because I just can’t get out of this gaping hole that’s killing me and relationships in my life. Feel worthless, down and hopeless
How long had you been sober? I'm only three weeks in, and I really went out(last drinking day) with a bang, so I want to get wasted more than ever, but AA meetings have been really helping me. Networking within them, there are alot of really genuine people.
You are not alone. I had 11 months sober and relapsed 2 weeks ago and lost my job, my rental, my furniture, and wound up in a 10 day detox far from home. But we can't give up. We have to hold on to hope. Starting over sucks, but we are STILL alive and have yet another chance. In my opinion, don't beat yourself up. Resenting yourself will lead to using again. You have a new sobriety date--so be it. Time to move forward and focus on what lies ahead and not on the relapse that just happened: it's history.
3 weeks here too!
Been there before. The good thing is you get to try again.
Thank you for your support. It seems that I can’t go over a week until “ oops I did it again” . I just feel a little better and go at it again swearing it’s the last time
We are all human, as long as you can get back up and keep trying that’s all you can do. Have you tried any detox or step programs? There are plenty of different ones out there. You can and will get sober. Good luck and reach out if you need to.
You say you can't get out of this hole that's killing you. The thing is, you can get out of the hole. But what are you willing to give up in order to get out of it?
I heard the word "relationships." If you're not married you should put relationships on hold for a while(1 year)until you can get this thing figured out. And trust me when I say this because I have been in many relationships in and out of AA and they were all a dead end because of decisions that I made that were based on self.
As far as relapsing is concerned, we have to learn to play the scene forward. If you pick up a drink you may feel good for a short period of time but eventually you're going to end up right back where you are at the moment you started. You will have accomplished nothing and you will have to start all over. In other words it's a big fat lie. The disease tells you that this time things will be okay but they never are, are they?
I also hope that you're not trying to do this on your own. You should be going to meetings everyday and getting phone numbers of people that have long-term sobriety.
Here's what you need to know if you want to get out of this place that you call the gaping hole. It comes from the doctor's opinion in the Book of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Men and women drink essentially because they like the effect produced by alcohol. The sensation is so elusive that, while they admit it is injurious, they cannot after a time differentiate the true from the false. To them, their alcoholic life seems the only normal one. They are restless, irritable and discontented unless they can again experience the sense of ease and comfort which comes at once by taking a few drinks—drinks which they see others taking with impunity. After they have succumbed to the desire again, as so many do, and the phenomenon of craving develops, they pass through the well-known stages of a spree, emerging remorseful, with a firm resolution not to drink again. This is repeated over and over, and unless this person can experience an entire psychic change there is very little hope of his or her recovery.”
Set backs happen If you pick yourself up that’s all that counts I recommend naltrexone or the vivitrol shot Works wonders
Thank you so much for this insightful response. It really opened my eyes up, I read the big book but didn’t really understand or related to it at that time. I’ll give it another try. Thank you
Keep quitting till it sticks! You got this, if you fall 7 times you better get back up 8. It doesn’t matter who quits on you just don’t quit on yourself!!! I remind myself of these things everyday. Hope this helps you a little sad well
Yes!!!!
First thing you need to do is look at yourself in the mirror and talk to yourself in a POSITIVE State. You aren’t that person who beats herself up. You are woman hear you roar. Look back on your life and say to that woman in the mirror look what I have accomplished so far and learned in life. And take this new ATTITUDE and use it everyday. Remember it’s all about YOU and putting YOURSELF FIRST. You Got This.
I made it 4 years and relapsed. Trust me, I know the feeling. You have to get rid of any reservation that you can ever pick up again. Get to meetings and follow suggestions. The only reason I relapsed is that I got comfortable because I got everything back and stop fellowshipping and hitting meetings and I wasn't helping another person in recovery. I slowly became selfish again and took my Will and life back and I should know from experience that I do nothing good when that happens and run everything into the ground. And each time I relapse it's like I started right where I left off or even worse. But don't beat yourself up, know that you have an actual disease that you did not chose and it wants you ruined and or dead. Pick yourself up, get your
together and start being the best version of yourself you can be so you can give everything you have been given to someone else. It all comes down to selfishness. Let's start being selfless, what can we add to the stream of life? You got this!
Humans make mistakes. The key is to not beat yourself up and restart the clock. You don’t have to drink again.
Be kind to yourself. You can make it through, keep on believing
