I told my dad I’m getting sober, he said “we will see how long that lasts!” That hurt, I’m trying to realize that I can’t change what he thinks, he’s been drinking more lately so I think that’s part of it. I CAN do it. I am doing it, everyday. I just need some words of wisdom to deal with people who can’t or won’t be completely on board with this.

You go. This is ur own personal journey. Don’t let anyone drag u down. Use it as motivation to prove them wrong!
I got the same thing from friends bc I’m the last one anyone thought would quit. I always wanted one more and was a total bad influence. That should have been a stop sign for me a long time ago, but I hadn’t reached my breaking point or realized I not only could but I should stop. That bit is different for everyone. Whatever ur reasons for quitting, use that to stay strong. It’s a weight and burden lifted not to be a slave to alcohol. Life is so much better. Not easy but better. Sobriety is a super power. Keep it going!

Remember too that ur drinking friends and family probably won’t want u to stop bc it makes them feel bad about themselves. That’s another trap.
After u have been sober a while and others see u CAN do it, you’ll b an inspiration! They will see how well you’ve done without alcohol and just maybe you can help others :+1:t3:

Do it for you. No one else. If the people around you want to be negative, maybe they should take a step back and look at why they aren’t happy. You don’t owe anything to anyone. If you’ve tried getting sober before and have failed or relapsed, so be it. And if that’s why they want to make certain comments like that, then tell them to stop trying to rob a house you no longer live in. We live each day for what it is. We don’t drink, just for today. And when tomorrow comes, we’ll worry about it then.

When it comes to family and friends, less talk and more action is better. Don’t tell them…show them. They don’t want to hear it anymore. They don’t understand, and they never will. As a father who has a daughter, I’m sure he will be very pleased to SEE the change. Also, as a father who has a daughter, we don’t always say the right things. Doesn’t mean we don’t love or care for y’all. We just get old and crusty some times lol. You absolutely CAN do this ODAAT

These are all so great, thank you. I needed to hear that. I’ll try my best to brush those comments off and just show him. I was his beer drinking buddy when we hung out, so I get it. And it kind of came out of the blue too, my parents don’t know how much I’ve been struggling. You all are so helpful, I appreciate it!:two_hearts:

Melissa, you have to take care of yourself. P!ss on what anyone else says! You are worth the work you are doing and you are going to be a great influence on others. Thanks for sharing

I quit drinking 2 weeks ago, and I haven’t fully come out and told anyone yet. I’m proving to myself that I can do this. Once I gain a little more time and a little more trust in myself. I will come out and tell people that this is me now. And I’ll be able to tell them I’ve had a month or two or whatever, sober from alcohol, and that I wish to continue it. Also for them to respect it and not ask me to drink or party or anything. Otherwise I will not be able to hangout w them.

You can do it. Don’t listen to them and prove them wrong. You are doing it for you first and foremost. You can still be his buddy just minus the beer there’s other options. I believe in you!

They probably have a right to be skeptical. If you're anything like me you've told them this several times before. After a time your actions are the only thing that show anything. Your words mean nothing. Recover and in time what you say will be believed

I'm sorry your dad feels that way. Just because your dad feels that doesn't mean it's your truth.

People become and stay sober everyday. So why not you? You can do this.

When I first told my family I was moving to Florida they said there is no way I would make it. Been here since 2012. When I said I would get sober nobody believed me ( not even myself) I am over a year sober. Sometimes you have to take things and use them as fuel. You can definitely do it!

Be grounded in yourself the more time you spend alone on your path the stronger you become. Solitude. And inner connection. Then no one's words mean anything, even the ones we love have their projections they cast upon us.

Yep got a year not doing silly stuff an I want a pat on the back when everyone else already does the right thing.

We string together a few days and want an award

Thing is people need to see it to believe it

Your recovery is yours so own it and be joyous

That’s exactly what a counselor/mentor told me when I went to rehab and I will never forget it. I said “Everyone is telling me this is their third or fourth time here” I was crying and asking what the heck am I gonna do. He said simply that . People stay sober and so can you . That was over 5 years ago !!

That’s right . Fuel to keep focused and than you might surprise yourself!! Congrats on the 1yr

Sadly, it is sometimes those we love who are not destined to take the journey with us. We must remember 2 things. 1 I will not live down to their expectations. 2 they have the right to go the opposite direction.

As bad as it sucks sometimes we have to live in spite of them instead of being inspired. The good news is sometimes we inspire them.

Wow, what a response :unamused:

I think it’s important to remember this saying from a wise man: “Be careful who you share good news with.

You want to share good news with people who will be genuinely happy for you. That’s one way you can identify those people who are on your side.”
