Is there a general view or impression of marijuana use by an alcoholic? Are you still considered "sober" if you get high?

I personally consider sober as relative to a given substance. Sober to alcohol, not to weed is what I would say that is. I self-identify as a recovered problem drinker (never developed the physical addiction symptoms).
Alcohol is my poison. Drinking will wreck my life. That is my focus. nuff said
For me it’s anything that alters my thinking. I have to abstain from all drugs and alcohol.
It’s different for everyone!
I believe a drug is a drug.. alcohol weed meth crack.. they’re all a drug and you’re not sober if you’re using any of them.. you just switch from one to the other..
Mark, this is a somewhat common question on this app.
Websters Dictionary helps us out on this one.
Sober:
“abstaining from drinking alcohol or taking intoxicating drugs : refraining from the use of addictive substances”
If I didn't smoke I don't think I could stay clean from things I consider to actually be drugs. But that's for myself. I only know me.
That's kind of were im at... If marijuana would have been more socially acceptable as a youth I likely never would have become an alcoholic. A lot head, but my liver would have thanked me
It comes down to what you think and what your program is.only you know the program that helps you.trading one addiction for another is still active addiction.
What do you think about it?
If you have to ask then you know you shouldn’t do it.
I don't consider weed an addiction at least no where to the level of negativity that alcohol brought my life. Alcohol had a hold of me, it controlled every thing I did and didn't care the damage left behind. There was alcohol and the everything else was a distant 2nd. Weed has never had that grip. I'll pick up enough to last a weekend off or on vacation, but if I don't have any my day doesn't change. I consider how I handle weed how most "normal" people handle alcohol - happy hours, responsible, social.
While weed doesn't have the hangovers, the desperation for the next hit, health issues, family issues... It does help tremendously with my anxiety, better than any prescription meds and nearly as effective as getting black out drunk.
I wasn't asking if I should or shouldn't do it.
It sounds like you have put a lot of thought into this topic. that is great!! Only you know what is truly helpful to you and your goals. hopefully you have a system or plan in place to help just in case weed becomes a new form of escape.
You have done so much hard work to achieve the goals you have already achieved.
My apologies! Your totally right about all the above. I’m mad because one of my kids thinks it’s worse than a pill, so if I use it then I can’t see my grandchild. So I stopped. I do apologize.
No need to apologize. Your example is really what I am after, as I know there are people that have such a negative view of it because it's illegal. As an alcoholic I'm used to being stereotyped and judged, so I'm well aware of what others would think (right or wrong)
This is a very controversial subject especially among younger people. Everybody wants to have something to help them cope with this business of life.
I define sobriety as being free and clear of anything that alters your mind. And yes I know that caffeine is a drug.
I have to take a DOT drug test every year in order to prove that my body is free from anything that is dangerously mind altering.
They never look for caffeine during these tests but they do look for traces of marijuana, alcohol and many other drugs all for good reason.
One of the great truths in life is that life is tough. Some people become victims and take this to their graves. They never seem to be able to accept this fact.
Once we accept the fact that life is tough, the fact that life is tough no longer matters and we learn to excel in life without putting any mind altering substances into our bodies.
Sobriety is full of many blessings and challenges but you have to be willing to stop putting any kind of mind altering substances into your body to experience these blessings.
Working through these challenges without putting any mind altering substances into our bodies today is what makes us who we are tomorrow.
Dave, the truth is this is the most ignorant thing I've read on here. Wow. You being an older guy, you seem to have given up on learning anything over the last 20 years. Let me guess ? You're an AA bible banger too. Evident by the level of douchebag you are.
Do you know that mental health is a disease and it needs to be treated, often by medication that alters your mind? Do you know these medications are 100x more addictive than marijuana and also can create horrendous withdrawals if you stop and possibly death. A heroin addict friend of mine compared withdrawal of her antis to that of heroin. When she couldn't afford to go to the Dr she turned to heroin. . Do you know that OPIODs are taking over this world, and most stem from addiction to pain meds. Do you know that marijuana would cost 1/10th for natural, non addictive treatment for many diseases and reduce pain without the side effects? Do you know that Bill W took LSD prior to starting the big book and wanted to have it part of the program but hypocrites like yourself said "Shame on you" as if they were any better than Bill..
Do you know that last year there were no deaths from from marijuana overdose, or the year before or the year before or ever? Do you know how many people kill themselves every year because they're suffering from mental health issues that our current system is failing to fix? Did you know that RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) is an extremely potent THC that cured Rick Simpson of cancer and severally reduces the side effects of chemotherapy? Do you know it doesn't stop there? Please do some research before making such holiar than though statements
I hope your make believe God gives the power to recognize that you have no knowledge therefor no need to add input. You're the reason people don't like going to AA, judgemental, uneducated biggot
Weed is addictive because feeling good is addictive. My ex smoked weed very day. She didn't think it was addictive until she had a mild stroke and after that was told by docs to stop doing it,at least for awhile while they monitored her recovery. She knew about a week later that it was definitely addictive......
Weed was never my DOC. I put down everything else no problem, but booze was my Kryptonite. I go to AA meetings and I'll say I'm an alcoholic, NA , I'll identify as an addict. I don't take anyone else's inventory figuring that's just not my place. I don't personally care what you do to modify you're reality, I just know I can't drink.
