Anyone ever feel lonely in recovery? I feel uncomfortable opening up about my feels (because WOAH I feel everything and it’s intense!) but I need to get it out. Does journaling help? Should I try and reach out to people also in recovery? I haven’t been going to meetings (or anywhere) because of bad social anxiety
Yep... I'm 9 months sober and seem to have lost the ability to socialize... feel awkward and uncomfortable
Then I must be really bad off because I don’t think I ever knew how not to be awkward
I'm certain this will pass... being sober is a new beginning... I'm healthier and clear minded... trying to treat my body like a temple... body mind and spirit... I'm a work in progress
Yes.. there are so many new experiences but that’s part of growth too. Glad you’re feeling healthier by being so mindful about feelings. I hope to get better at stopping to realize “this will pass.”
I was a hot mess for the first 6 months... but things have gotten better... my problems haven't gone away... I'm more level headed... I'm divorced and have an 11 year old son... I need to be available and present... I'm a retired Marine and have had to change everything about my life... if I can be steadfast in my recovery I know everything will work it's self out
Journaling helps process, so does talking to others. Get out to a meeting - they're not as scary as you think!
You can do zoom and hide and just listen. Or share without appearing. No excuses to keep growing in recovery.
There’s zoom meetings and you can have your camera off, but forcing yourself to go to an in person meeting could change your life in all the best ways! I journal and reach out to people whenever my feelings are icky!
I journaled for a few months, but ultimately I just had to face my fear and go to a meeting, and let it all pour out. The reception made it easy to go back. I had an entire community who understood, didn’t push but was willing to listen and give advice. It truly was life changing.
Hey girl! Journaling is huge in recovery! It’s a way of getting all your feelings out and you can always reread it later and remember how you got through some good or bad moments. Reaching out is hard but so worth it! We are all just trying to make it another day clean & sober☺️ be proud of yourself!
Hey I am newly in recovery and would love someone to just talk about life and ideas with. An easy way to pass the time while being anxious or craving drinking. If you were interested I would love to talk to you about any and everything that’s on your mind
Lonely AS F girl, you aren’t alone!
I always extremely lonely as well. Even at meetings but I still go. I don’t feel like I fit in anywhere.
Always had bad anxiety and PTSD. Its one of the reasons I turned to drinking to hide from feelings of discomfort or awkwardness which kept me from enjoying life and having healthy relationships. I now realize those are the feelings I need to feel and understand and move on from to stay away from alcohol and rebuild my life
Personally I think you're setting yourself up for a big relapse. You're not going to meetings. Your alcoholism is convincing you that because you don't drink anymore you suffer from social anxiety and you can't communicate with people. These are all big lies.
I would forget about how you feel and just start going to meetings. You didn't get this way over night you're not going to get better overnight.
Learning to live all over again without picking up a drink or drug takes time.
Thanks for your service Marine
Meetings Big book and a sponsor... well stated Dave
Ashli, journaling helped me do much! I still journal. It’s amazing to write down what we are going through, a gratitude list, manifestation list, and prayer list. I even do a daily reprieve. At night before bed I ask myself a few question out of the big book on page 86.
I pray a lot more now. That seems to really help me. Going to meetings and talking to the newcomer is another great way to get outside of myself.
As for the loneliness feeling, fir me, it comes and goes. I’m recently divorced after 16 years with someone, the last few years in sobriety have been filled with feelings and emotions and being lonely. I find it helps when I call another alcoholic or go to a meeting. I don’t mind being alone it’s the emotional part that makes it difficult sometimes. I’ve been leaning more on God to help me through these times…
I’ll pray for your healing. Remember this too shall pass.
@ashleigh53370 you’re not alone girl. I’m here for you and it doesn’t have to be an isolated experience. Therapy helps and I started taking supplements for anxiety(not RX meds) natural herbs. A workout routine and a friend would be great to start. I’m here for you just send a message and I’m available.
