Leggo my Ego

I find it interesting that within many 12 step programs as well as just the ramblings of us addicts that we all agree that our egos get in the way of our recovery. Many people say things like "we are not the center of the universe" etc. The definition of egotism or inflated ego is: an exaggerated estimate of your own value and importance.

So, if I am to believe that I am not as important as I think I am, then why would anyone think that the omnipresent, all knowing, "creator of the universe" take an occasional moment to diddle in one's life, ya know, when he feels like it/not too busy/not doing whatever it is "he" does-so mysterious?

This makes no sense to me. How do you say in the same breath, with the glazed over look of a true believer that you are humble while also believing that the "creator" cares about you? How do you justify this and make sense of this obvious contradictory belief?

Also, while he's busy helping you not be a drunken scumbag, why are children who are absolutely innocent, being abused, often by "men of god" and even remaining in good standing with their houses of worship?

Thoughts?

I am simply curious as to how a person believes two opposing thoughts and the justification of those beliefs.

Not in this post, directly, no.

Oh boy....

I think your missing what I'm saying, maybe I'm not explaining it well.

Welp, believe what you want. Your life. Not up to me or even God himself to change what you think. Heck, God himself could appear in front of you right now and still wouldn’t change a thing. That’s why the rooms are the closet thing to God on earth I believe because you can make up whatever you want to believe in and still stay sober. Just easier for most to have a power greater watching your back in times of need. If you want to be your own higher power then so be it. Just not right putting down others for having a power other than themselves helping out. I could care less what folk believe. Not my jay oh bee to change others. Only person that matters is me and my sobriety. Oh yeah, and God! lol

I already know what you believe K Brad. You didn't answer my question though!

If I am not the center of the universe, then why the heII would the "creator of the universe" care about whether I'm able to pay my rent or stay sober or hook up with the hot trashy girl that works the cash register at the 7/11?

It seems to me that only an egomaniac would belive that the creator of the universe would care about such things, especially when he, if so powerful, could do something about atrocities like children being abused.

Bahahahaha uh huh. Okay. Illogical. Wow.

You can't answer it, so you think it's unanswerable.

Sorry for making you use your brain.

Ahhhh Taylor.. you never disappoint that’s for sure.

I'm an AA member and have been for 20 months, I get it. Ive read We Agnostics, I find it to be a bit condescending. But it's what I expect from a guy from the 1930s. My home group is We Agnostics here in Cleveland haha

I'm totally not trying to be dickish! I need more than mindless feel good calendar memes, man!

For myself, I'm just Thankful for the Gift of desperation!

I think it's a belief in a being with infinite wisdom and care that leads one to abandon his ego and trust in him. As for all the atrocities in the world, that's tough. One idea is that the creator is sovereign over eternity, and that this life, and even the lifetime of this solar system is so short that nothing which happens here will compare with what is next. It's still no excuse for abuse or evil acts at all, which are hard to understand for sure.

Also I'm going to make waffles in the morning now, thanks for that.

Well I think the "big book" is where all this confusion lies. Its like me going to catholic school 12yrs worship a Jesus i dont believe existed as a higher power in my adult life. And now dont belive in organized religion. But i do believe in God/Universe whomever listening. But whatever you want to call it i feel like were all living in a hellz on earth. No wonder ppl medicate weather it be drugs booze food smoking. So pick your poison. Self reflection, purpose and karma are what we should be focusing on not the next person or anything mythical. One day at a time😊

I get it, and, I also understand your quest for knowledge. You have a knack for poking the bear, even when you don’t mean too. It is a valid question, and I was thinking about it tonight.
My answer would be… an omnipotent being, would be able to be everything, everywhere all at once. So, if that’s what someone needs to believe to get them through the day, awesome. I always thought the feel good memes were corny when I first got sober, but now I think there is truth to them. Has to be if they have survived 50 years. If it works it works.

Im not looking for a specific "answer" I'm curious what people's opinions are. That's it.

I hardly think blindly believing in something is being "open minded".

Also, I am not "bashing" anything. My questions are based on what I've observed. Nobody has even yet touched them with a 10 foot pole.

If you feel triggered by my questions, then maybe you should do some self investigation. About the only thing you've contributed here is tracking my opinions and yiur disdain for them.

I think the "higher power" is another thing people self medicate with. The hp that is some omnipotent being, for sure.

I think you, on your best day, is your higher power. Doing the right things, and being a good human. Like when people talk about being "elevated". We can only control our actions. We alone. Nothing else is controlling our actions (as far as we know, what's been proven). if there is something out there controlling our actions, they are doing terribly, or they are just really awful.

Higher power = higher resolution. More detailed analysis.
