Does anybody else feel lost? Life after drugs has been challenging. I have 6mos clean this week but I am struggling to find my identity. I do not know who I am and it’s scary bc I’m not really able to connect with people on an intimate level. That’s a big reason why i used… any suggestions?? Or can anyone relate?
I feel the exact same way. I’ve been sober from alcohol for about 7 months. I’m trying to figure out my personality. I don’t feel as interesting, fun, and as witty as I used to be. I’m having trouble connecting with people also. I don’t really know how to have fun anymore. Hopefully with time, things will get better.
I’m sorry I know how you feel. I find myself questioning every decision and thought that I have, not knowing how to act in social situations, and it’s just very frustrating bc it’s causing me to seek more external validation and I’m just fearful. I’m trying to give it to God but something is still off
Yes! I've been sober from alcohol for almost 11 months, I lost my friends, I'm ok with that. But now that I'm here doing this, I don't know who the heck I am. I'm continuing to try and find myself and get healthier, but I'm not even sure I like the things I'm doing. I don't get excited about anything. I'm sorry you're struggling. Maybe it's somewhat normal.
I sounds like we are all feeling the same way. I’m terrified that I’ll never really be able to connect with anyone again. I’m worried because I’m not really experiencing much fun anymore. Was alcohol the only thing that brought joy in my life?
I know what you mean, I’m struggling even now with emotions and cravings. I only have 5 days clean. Gotta connect to people and to a higher power that you understand.
I am legit praying and meditating and reading the Bible at this very moment trying to connect. I know this feeling is temporary but I am just feeling very disconnected. But I’m also grateful that I’m not the only one experiencing this.
Feel you 100%. Almost 3 years clean after 30 years of use. I’m coming to terms with the fact that I might never feel ‘normal’ again. Relationships are difficult, it’s lonely, etc…. I can now say, regardless of the final outcome it’s all on me, I created this mess and I’ll have to slowly climb out of it. I stopped hoping for quick results, but I work for them.
Thanks that’s actually really helpful
For me, I surrounded myself with people that were into the same stuff as me. Drinking and smoking, I could use them as a ruler to gauge myself at times. Well I wasn’t as bad as so n so. I don’t have a problem. You may find yourself not being able to relate to those around you because without those substances you aren’t the same person to them nor yourself. You will find who you truly are, give it time. Embrace feeling the world around you. Take it all in and enjoy it.
If you have a big book give that a read. Check out the stories in the back. It doesn’t matter which you read. You’ll find connections, it perfectly normal to feel lost in sobriety. Channel all the effort you put into drinking into staying sober and working the program and you’ll come out on top.
6 months is relatively fresh in the big picture . Think how long u weren’t sober . It’s going to take a long time and many different phases of recovery until u even being to re learn who you are going to be. But know this , even in the uncertainty , you are 100 times better off sober😊
Try doing some stuff that you used to like before your first drink or drug. For me it was kid stuff. Bikes, swimming, camping. I rewatched movies from when I was a kid with my kids.
And immerse yourselves in recovery. With other people. Fellowship. Service. It works.
If you’re honest with yourselves, looking back at the wreckage of addiction, you’ll see it wasn’t really fun. It was familiar and there’s comfort in that, but what happens today, in this moment, will determine tomorrow. All of those yesterdays are set in stone. Leave them in the past where they belong.
I've only been sober for three months, but I feel ya. Being a drunk was such a big part of my personality, my identity. I had to figure out who I was. I'm still figuring it out. Not drinking also means I'm now feeling everything I was numbing myself against. It's not that we're different people, we're just finding out who we were underneath it all the whole time.
Sober 6 months. Totally feel you man. Kinda a weird period where you know what’s up, but frustrated things don’t change faster.
It definitely helps
Ugh, I feel this. I’ve been sober for 5 months from alcohol. I’m awkward (or feel clumsy) in social situations, like I’m boring & out of sorts. It’s good to read all of these responses.
Definitely not alone. I’m trying to figure out who I am these days. What do I even want, where do I start. I feel so lost most days.
Yeah, I’m 7 months clean and sober, I have no idea what I like or who I am, but I truly gave up everything for my addiction so I see it as starting over. I can be anyone I want, no one liked me in active addiction and I hated myself. Not a single person was there for me when I finally surrendered, and I just try to get closer to being someone I like everyday, the rest will fall into place. One thing that helps me is knowing no matter what, if I have my sobriety I won’t be who I used to be and that’s a good thing.
Thank you for your vulnerability
and I agree these responses are VERY helpful
