My husband pointed out today that I'm a high functioning

My husband pointed out today that I'm a high functioning alcoholic. I couldn't even argue with him because it's the truth. I'm embarrassed and disappointed because for years I got upset about my mom being an alcoholic, and here I am...drinking. I remember picking up my first drink at about 13. I don't drink daily....only on my days off. I binge drink which isn't healthy. I'm going to start attending AA meetings tomorrow. I'm ready to change.

People usually see it before we see or admit it. But admitting was the biggest step for me. Don't be too down on yourself it's normal. Accept the fact and fix it. Reach out anytime about anything. People here like to help. Best of luck, it does get better.

I can understand your frustration with yourself, but try and remember alcoholism is an illness. You have an allergy to it. Plus, I found AA to be a pretty awesome fellowship. Wishing you peace and serenity in your new journey :peace_symbol:

I just joined the app. And I’m not happy what your going through but it’s nice to know I’m not alone either.I bought a large bottle of wine last night intending on only having a few glasses and saving for later in the week and I didn’t . My husband doesn’t drink at all which makes me feel even worse. I feel like I’m “rewarding” myself for the day and it turns into a full day/night drinking event. I don’t want this in my life anymore. I will do evrrything I can to stop myself but I hope to have support from people who understand. Just as I’ve said to myself WE have both reached out to support groups and idk about you but to me that says a lot. We got this! We ALL GOT THIS

That is exactly me too!!! I don’t have an off switch. I only drank on my days off. I just can’t stop :stop_sign:. So awesome to know someone else like me. Not any alcoholic is better than another. It harms all of us in different ways. It is just easy to relate to someone with the same issue

I totally understand. I have accepted the fact that I can't drink because I don't know how to do it in moderation.

My husband doesn't drink either so I can relate to feeling worse. I plan to log on here daily to stay on track. Everyone so far has been really supportive.

Yes. I intend to just have a few drinks to relax after long hours of work. It last sometimes 2 days. I wake up in a panic attack taking personal inventory ….OMG where is my $800 iPhone, where is my purse, where are my car keys. What the hell did I do online or text that will make people hate me. Did I do anything to destroy my job. Then hung over 2 days in a deep depression hating myself cause I am an idiot. I never drink and drive but what difference does it make if I ride with someone who does🤪. Or the amount of damage it is doing to my body to drink 12-18 beers or liquor. I definitely want to stop for good and find a way to enjoy having fun without alcohol

Someone shared a 24 hour AA zoom meeting with me. I've been tuning in all day today. It's really enlightening. I posted the information in a post not long ago.

You are sooo blessed your husband doesn’t drink. My ex who I am dating and been with 40 years and my kids drink. They just don’t get stupid. I am having to stay away when drinking until I am strong enough to maybe drink non alcoholic beer or sparkling water and be ok. I know I can’t drink.

I drink lots of sparkling water! Some people can drink, but those of us that have a problem with drinking can't partake.

Wow! The power of the fellowship is very strong. You ladies have much in common. Its so powerful to connect with people we can finally relate with! The sneaking, hiding, and fear is terrible. It’s a lonely existence when you have no one who understands what you are going thru. We are not horrible, awful, disgusting people. We can be when we drink, but it’s because we have an illness. Anyway, it’s so cool to see ladies find each other on this thread. Addiction/alcoholism doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care about your gender, race, ethnicity, social economic status etc. We all have a common problem and a common solution :peace_symbol:
