I found myself isolating from people I know. I don’t want to be around them because of the reoccurring themes “ Dinner & Drinks, Boozy Brunch, Painting with a Twist” I mean everything has alcohol involved! It’s not their fault but my gosh what ever happened to hiking? Picnic?kayak? Museum tour? It’s ok to find a different tribe until you trust yourself around alcohol again. It’s almost like we have to retrain our minds and remember how to have fun without getting crappy.
The only thing a person needs to change to be happily sober is….. everything.
You’d be surprised that some of those people that drink that we’re friends they just envy you because you have the power over the alcohol instead of the uncle having a power over you. The downside they want to be sober to
Make New friends in sobriety you are who you hang around read Psalms one
my friend groups started to die because of this and i was really really sad over it for a while in sobriety. but then i realized once the booze was taken away we didnt really have that much in common. its a hard transition period. like the BB says if you have a valid reason to go to a bar show up briefly. VALID REASON. not to have fun or because of fomo. i suffer from FOMO
Really ? How do figure that ?
lol what is fomo?
What helped me with that is really getting connected in a sober community—I chose AA and the fellowship that has sprung up around me is incredible. I still hang out with my old friends occasionally but I’d much rather spend time with my AA sponsorship family. They know how to have a good time… sober
(PS FOMO is fear of missing out)
Friends?
I feel ya! It is soooo hard to make sober friends everything around me is engulfed with alcohol. Even my running group meets at a bar before and after. All I can say is keep trying.
You are a wise to stay away from people that drink until you build some serious clean time.
If you hang around a barbershop long enough, you're going to get a haircut!
Got it. I don’t experience fomo at all. I’m bored of the same shenanigans. I’m in south Florida and it’s a party town city w/e. Full of smokin mirrors really.
Sheesh ! Wth drinks after a run or before ? Wow haha I’d be so crappy.
Makes sense .
After lolz. Not everyone drinks and I joined to have some cardio and meet some people! But yea def a drinking culture out there!
Yikes! I have heard a lot of stories about Florida from people
Recovery and solid people everywhere if you look for it. I literally had to embarrass the heck out of myself at meetings before I found my fellowship
You have to find new friends in sobriety it’s so important for long term recovery. Anyone I used to hang out with drinking and getting high with i don’t even speak to anymore, every contact on my phone is in recovery. PERIOD.
Totally understand this! What I didn’t realize, is that the same friends I used to always go boozin’ with, were the same ones basically begging me to get sober. Now, whenever we hangout, they make sure to provide enough sparkling water for me & LOTS of snacks, lol. I know it’s hard whenever we live in an alcohol driven society, but like someone mentioned above, some of my friends have found my sobriety to be empowering to them & enjoy doing sober hangouts. So, keep on keeping on! You’re doing great!
Unless you’re a Social Drinker (honestly), and that’s what I wanna be but I am not.
I didn’t have that problem as alcohol and an narcissistic ex took everything including friends. I’ve found some good ones in recovery
