Tell me please

I could use a little lecturing right now about how important it is to stay away from addicts in early recovery. My mind is playing tricks on me.

You got this. The good news is, you are aware that your thoughts are not in your best interest. It's important to stay busy with something constructive. For me, I love journaling. It helps me get my thoughts and emotions out of my head and out on paper. It also is a reminder of my progress. Sounds silly but coloring is also a great way to quiet your mind if staying busy is what you need. If you need to find peace, guided meditation is amazing. So many different ways to get rid of those thoughts. Reach out if you need additional support. You are in an amazing community and everyone is rooting for you! Stay strong! The rewards far outweigh giving in and starting over.

To make it through one day, I focus on breathing deeply, staying occupied, calling friends in recovery and remembering the consequences of my drinking experiences.

Elaborate a little further if you would.

My ex is an addict. I keep going back and forth on whether I can be around him. He is not an alcoholic like I am so sometimes I think since it’s different it will be okay. But I’ve never managed to stay sober around him so I’m pretty sure I need to stay away.

Thank you for the ideas. I tried painting and that helped. I could expand my horizons though!

Small steps in the right direction can have big impacts :blush:

Face to face meeting with alot of people. Tell them how you're feeling and grab phone list. If none, then still talk. The people that share are sometimes scared too, so don't be self centered.

You should stay away :pray:t3::heart::muscle:t4:

Easier said than done, but it will make the process much much easier, especially in the early stages

All the people I know with years of clean time said the same thing - find the winners and stick with them. It can be tempting to stay closest to those who are also in early recovery but the people who have been in the rooms the longest are the ones to learn from.

Yeah, all my alcohol friends are a thing of the past. I had to move on without them.

Makes sense

I don’t know that it’s that important. Could be motivation when you see how jacked up they are by it

Your mind will continue to play tricks on you, the idea is to come to a point that you are aware of all the tricks in your head and reach out for help like your doing…the stronger you become the harder it will be for these tricks to fool you

Going back to an ex can provide a feeling of comfort. Alcohol can provide comfortable. We all like to be comfortable. To grow we have to experience uncomfortable situations. The ex sounds like a bad idea. Slippery slope type idea. It’s never worked for me

I just keep thinking because he doesn’t drink...it would maybe be okay. But I remember being triggered to drink last time I tried to get sober when he continued to use. I like to think I’m stronger now...but I know it’s probably just my codependency trying to convince me

You have to put some self worth on yourself u know if u have thoughts of drinking when you were around him it’s putting your sobriety in jeopardy he will get u drunk quicker than you can get him clean know your worth they say if u hang at the barber enuff you’ll get a cut the only way your gonna be successful if if you surround yourself around people who are in recovery or not using its impossible to maintain around addicts give your self some time to get better be a example that he docents have to live like that he will respect you for wanting better for yourself if he truly does care for you otherwise he’s gonna show you some things put them on the shelf and keep moving forward

I went to 2 meetings yesterday and going again today. Thank you for reminding me that the best way to give him a chance is to have him see me get better. I cannot fix him. I have tried. Thank you for the reality check
