The abstinence model only sets you up to believe a slip will kill you. It probably won’t.
A slip is not a relapse!
Xoxo please don’t ban me for stating truth re: alcohol Ty Ty
Sobriety is a journey and it’s about staying clean for as long as possible. Problem drinker here that didn’t develop the physical addiction but definitely a psychological dependency. Haven’t relapsed since I quit and if for some reason I fell off the wagon I’d get right back on.
Hey girl, I validate your thoughts and opinions on this, but hearing this from someone who literally was dying in the ER from "one slip" really was a zinger for me. That "one slip" isn't just "one drink". That leads to days of it, nothing but it. On repeat for weeks-it was my 3rd time & I almost did not make it this time. You can express your thoughts and opinions, but possibly consider a different platform. Is it worth all of this as I don't see how this is productive or beneficial for anyone. I mean...is it even for you? Kind regards.
As much as I'd like to agree that a slip may not kill you...It might. It's kinda like play Russian roulette. There is a chance you won't die, but you might so why chance it?
Hey Juliana! This in an open forum to discuss and support sobriety. I hope you don’t get banned for sharing what you feel is true. Just be cognizant that others have their truths and they may not be the same as yours. You’re very smart, and I’m sure you absolutely know this already lol. I sympathize with you because I know you have endured other’s truths forced upon you. I applaud that you have broken free of that and found your own way and truths. Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like you intentionally stir the pot a bit to get a reaction from those who imposed their truths on to you. Since you have opened your mind to other paths, then I’m sure you know that nobody really has the absolute truth. I enjoy the open discussions of recovery, but you start them off in a very antagonistic way by stating your truth as “the truth”. Again, I think you do this purposely because of your past experiences, and your wanting to get back at those hardliners. WE should ALL be mindful of respecting all opinions, and that we are dealing with a group of people who are going thru some very difficult and dark times. Much love to everyone as we continue on our journeys of recovery
❤🩹
“ you “ statements are seldom recovery driven. I believe it takes away others power to recover in the way that works for them.
Everyone’s journey is different. Relapse is a huge part of my story. Slips have almost killed me and caused my family a lot of pain with them. Again that is just my story. People have to find what works for them
Thought a slip was garment wore under a dress
I don't think wimmins wear those anymore, do they?
Didn't this girl claim to be a "Jewish Atheist"??
I don't know why people keep flagging your posts. This is an open forum. People can disagree, but it seems silly to report something because you don't like what it says.
While I absolutely agree that the abstinence model isn't flawless and some people absolutely can learn to moderate, I think it depends on the individual and their level of self contol and motivation. You might like the Drink Less Lifestyle podcast by Dr. Sherry Price. I haven't listened myself, but I've heard good things. I know for myself, I tend to fall into the All or Nothing thinking trap so one drink never ends up being 1 drink. Ive found moderating very difficult and I would start off with good intentions and then continually say "just one more." I found it easier to just quit it altogether. Alcohol really has no health benefits. It's a depressant, increases blood pressure, increases risks of disease and cancer and damages the brain in high doses and any specific drinks I like, I've been able to find in a nonalcoholic form. So for me, there's no benefit to moderating just more potential risk. That being said, each individual is different and I know some people that used to be heavy drinkers and now just have the occasional drink.
I was sober for 4 years and "slipped" at my bachelor party. Took one shot and I don't even have a problem per se with alcohol but it lead me right back to my doc and I was dead in a month. I didn't see what this post fully said but I can imagine from others comments. And in all actuality, it isn't the drugs and alcohol that gives us the problem, that is only a symptom...the problem is us, our thinking, our reactions to conflict and adversity, our immaturity. The whole point of "recovery" is to grow mentally and spiritually not to stay sober only. I'm grateful to be an addict because it is this and only this that could break my pride and selfishness and bring me to my knees and ask for help. Most "Normies" go through life thinking everything is fine but at least we have this that forces us to work on ourselves and for that I am grateful!
Time warned is time earned. 2 years sober followed by a week of drinking does not invalidate your progress. Tired of hearing people discuss a relapse like the time you had was a failure.
Slip, relapse, semantics. If the intent is to stay sober the outcome is failure. One truth about alcoholism is that one will lead too many. If you can just have a couple with no adverse consequences and stop, you might not be an alcoholic.
Great point
I have never slipped and not fallen in regards to alcohol. So I work daily to prevent a slip. That’s what works for me. If people ask me for help, I encourage them to do everything possible to avoid the first drink.
You do know Jewish is an ethnicity as well as a religion, right? You can disagree with her recovery stance all you want, but attack the argument, not the individual.
“Jewish” relates to the monotheistic religion Judaism, which is grounded in the Old Testament and other teachings of rabbis.
