They say I can’t because I’m an alcoholic

My boyfriend and parents tell me that I can never become an EMT because I am an alcoholic. I understand yes, in this moment in my life I’m not capable due to my sobriety, but to tell me I never will because I’m an alcoholic has put a fire in me I haven’t felt in a long time. An “eff you just you watch!” attitude that I used to get with I was belittled or undermined.

So here I am 3 days sober, pre-studying every free EMT study guide and resource I’ll get my hands on. After some time sober, and my future relocation, and ride alongs I WILL take my EMT class and get my certification and prove them wrong.

When we are sober, we can and will do anything.

“They” don’t know about the miracles of recovery. I have seen the most incredible transformations in my years in the rooms of AA. Use it to motivate you, but go easy with the anger. While their words are hurtful, I’m sure they only want to see you feel well. Try and build a support group around you that will understand you, and help build you up. We got your back. We believe in you

When I became clean through the NA Program I became free to follow my dreams and aspirations. Yes WE can!

Working with others in the Big book of alcoholics anonymous addresses things like this real well.
Good luck on all the power to you for chasing your dream:muscle::muscle:

You can do whatever the heck you want! Just consider the program teaches us in recovery not to have resenents... If their trash talking motivates you thats great but be sure to take the right mindful steps so you dont have to go through life with feelings of anger at anyone. That doesnt hurt anyone but you!

If I can do it you can too! I got my emt right after getting sober then went to medic school. If anything it makes you better at your job and more empathetic when dealing with tough patients who struggle with addiction/ alcoholism.

They (boyfriend & parents) are clueless. They have no idea what the rules or policies are governing someone who wants to be an EMT. These are negative people who don’t support you. My suggestion is is move on and leave them in the dust. You need positive, supportive people, not negative jerks.

I wish I could leave them in the dust but right now I have a home because of my parents and as for my boyfriend idk I have stress and constant uncertainty.

Yesss once you focus on something passionate about it’s over with for drinking

From a lack of better words “f*#k em’”. I know for a fact that it’s doable. My father is a recovering alcoholic who is also a distinguished volunteer EMT, along with also becoming a pilot with his own plane, the owner of two successful grocery stores and more. Don’t let anyone say you can’t.

Your boyfriend tells you this? That's so sad.

. . . there are only two sins; the first is to interfere with the growth of another human being, and the second is to interfere with one's own growth.

-ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 542 (Third Edition)

I have met many alcoholics who have stayed sober and done awesome things for no other reason than spite. Harness that, and then show them. You got this.

My alcoholism hurt those who love me so badly. Their pain was so deep. They recognized the fact that I prioritized alcohol over them time and again. I was selfish. I was ego driven. Prideful. I used people and lied, cheated and stole.

When I got sober, my sponsor stressed to me not to get discouraged when others were slower to believe me when I told them I was a changed person. It took action on my part to regain the trust and begin to mend the damage I had done to them.

So, looking backwards at myself, I would now be able to see why others were skeptical of me in the beginning.

And to you, I would suggest you do focus on your goals, but not to prove anything to others, but rather to improve yourself.

That's a waste of bad advice they gave you. Some presidents have been alcoholics, military, lawyers, doctors ect. I know cause I'm one of them. It's non-sense. You decide your own future. Not others. Do you, prove them all wrong.

Jessica!!! You go girl! The only thing I can’t do in this life is safely drink Alcohol. Everything else is about putting in the work it takes to be the best at what you want to do…
I’ll pray that you get to be you and take the classes you need to be an EMT. Have fun doing it!
