Thoughts on naltrexone? I’m interested in people’s experiences with the pill vs the shot and your side effects. Thanks!

Personally I HATED it!!!! It felt like my head was in the clouds 24/7. I didn’t like it at all. So I said no thank you and dealt with alcohol on my own by simply not drinking.

Same thing and really tired for 3 to 5 days, but now it works great and I really don't have the urge at all.

I was started out on 25 MG and bumped up to 50 MG. Make sure you have something in your stomach or will be nuances.

Sorry nauseous. Spelling

You will have to let it run its course for 2 weeks until you see the real potential and side-effects and that's for the pill :pill: not the shot

Left me feeling listless, almost depressed. But I’ve heard some people have good success with it too. Like all things in life, there is no one size fits all. Probably one of those things you’ll have to discover through experience.

The only advice I can offer is it’s not something to take unless you are certain you are ready to stay sober. My friend took it and then relapsed and nearly died of alcohol poisoning bc she couldn’t feel herself getting drunk.
But I have heard it works for many too.. it’s just something to keep in mind.

You are past needing naltrexone I would think. It made me feel awful and wouldn't recommend regardless. :+1:

Done both but the pills were only useful (I found) in the time intervals btwn shots if I happened to be overseas or somewhere weird. But been on shot about 3 years now, had one bad reaction that had to do with drinking the day before and it was aweful but other than that just as long as the nurse massages the cheek it’s going in and plunges the serum in a tasteful manner (bc it’s thick) not ramming it into glute I can say I’ve had no bad reactions and that along with AA has ruined drinking (“relapse drinking” rather) for me. Might be worth a shot

I don’t have any naltrexone experience to share with you, but I’m happy to see you back. You are at difficult point in your journey, but please keep pushing thru it. It really does get better, and you will look back at these times and be grateful for every moment. Each experience is making you stronger.

I went with a different pill

It has been a true game changer for me!

I was prescribed the pill form and used it with the Sinclair Method. It gave me nausea early on if I took it on an empty stomach but that only lasted a few weeks. It also made me a bit tired, but insomnia was a big reason why I drank and so for me that was mostly a good thing. The only real negative side effect was that I would get a hangover if I drank more than 3-4 drinks while on it, whereas I drank 15-30 most nights before starting naltrexone and pretty much never got any.

With the Sinclair Method you only take it on days that you drink though, and so for me the side effects mostly just acted as extra incentive not to drink as often.

I was on naltrexone for a little over 7 months and my drinking steadily decreased from around 450-600 drinks per month down to just 7 when I finally quit. It's been almost 7 months since I quit and I no longer have any cravings or take naltrexone. It might not be for everyone, but for me it was the only way that I could quit and so I'm glad that I stuck with it.

What ever you do consult your doctor.

I was on it for 6 months. Yes the first couple of days you take partial doses. you’ll be in the clouds, a bit out of it with trouble sleeping. That goes away in 2-3 days. You take a few days of full doses then get the injection monthly. It’s not a cure and won’t work by itself. You still need a program.

Will help with cravings. And it’s suppose to block the effects of alcohol to a point but drink enough and you’ll be drunk as usual

For me nothing would work But so far AA is.

Would rather be on the shot. The pills landed me in the ER.

It's a tool that can be very helpful. It's not a replacement for meetings I find.
