What do you do?

I’m curious to know what some of y’all do for a living. I just feel like I’m at a point where I don’t know what to do and I’m intimidated to get tied down to a job because I feel like I won’t enjoy it, I’ll lose 70% of my day, or that I’ll just always feel some sort of resentment for the fact that I have to do things I don’t want/like in order to pay the bills.

Has anyone else been at this crossroads before? What do you do for a living and how did you get into that or get started with that kind of work?

Trevor, I’m in the telecommunications industry…. I got in by my aunt way back in the day. There’s so many aspects of telecom you can definitely find a position you’d like.

That is a very good question. I haven’t gotten back into work. I am living with my dad and he is supporting me, but I feel the same way you do.

I started my company after 12 years doing that for someone else. It was really scary at first but I’m glad I did it. If you have a marketable skill that you enjoy you should consider working for yourself.

Thank you for your response. I’m not entirely sure what telecommunications is or what that entails but I will look into it!

Yeah I just basically feel lost. Doordash is great in terms of a self determined schedule, and the freedom and fun you get to have every day.

But when you have the ADHD co-morbid with depression, anxiety/social anxiety and a few others, a self determined schedule can end up being more harmful than it is helpful.

That’s awesome, congratulations!

Funny you say that because I do love mix engineering. I just haven’t really been able to get clients online. I’m not the best with networking and putting myself out there.

I currently do doordash for income which has its many benefits. But I have the ADHD and it’s become kind of difficult to my finances and my time properly.

Mix engineering like making beats?

Not quite, no. Basically when you record the different parts for a song, they have to be mixed in order to sound good to the human ear. So you use a bunch of effects to make it sound more clear, present, and just better as a whole. The same is true for beats, the different parts of a beat (kick drum, snare, hi hats, etc), all need to be mixed for an artist to rap or sing over.

I started out 12+ years ago and fell in love with making low budget recording equipment sound professional. Especially because it was all i could afford lol

Have you thought about reaching out to local bands to mix their demos?

Yes and no, I’m not good with networking and things of that nature. The prospect of offering people a service they may not even need or want is very uncomfortable to me.

I just want people to send me the files and I mix and send it back to them. My main focus is usually just on the vocals which is why hip hop is great because i just mix vocals to sit in with a track of the entire beat. I do have a portfolio of friends, and of my own music for examples of my work. I just struggle finding the right platform to actually gain new clients. But I suppose my issue lies with consistency.

Hi Trevor, have you tried any career personality tests? There are some online. They basically ask you a bunch a questions and present you with a high level overview of your personality and interests and then some ares you might want to look into.

This is why we have the 7th tradition. It’s not just for the group.

Sobering up is fantastic. But we need to continue to practice the steps and traditions. Big Book tells us sobriety alone isn’t enough.

How did I know you were a badass Taylor? :joy:

I hear you, I’m just not into AA. Even meetings I genuinely enjoyed, I just find myself not caring to return to. It’s great for the first few days and then my adhd gives my brain a big shoulder shrug :man_shrugging:t5:

I’ll try the one you sent, I have tried them but they usually involve me doing things that are abstract and involve many years and your own monies to ever see any decent income. I make music, i have been since a kid. And every time that test comes back with “Musician/Artist, painter/artist,” among other things of that nature I just I have myself a big ole bowl of Honey Nut Triggered O’s… no.. triggered truffles? Something of the sort :joy:

Nah just had moments of fortune amid the fückery in my life. Made some good decisions among the shïtty ones.

I’m a dining services director for a senior living community.

I spent 25 years working my way up from cook to Executive chef and general manager. When I got sober 3.5 years ago I was very nervous about being in pro kitchens because “the lifestyle” of drinking/drugs/hookups was so prevalent. This is not the case in my current role.
